Nose Culture Results

I took Abby to the Pedi on Wednesday because the daycare told us that she "sounded bad", was "acting strange", and "her snotty nose is a color we've never seen." Pedi cultured the nose and these are the results:

1. Streptococcus pneumoniae
2. Haemophilus Influenzae

He will find out tomorrow what the "sensitivity" is and figure out what he will need to do as far as antibiotics for her to eradicate both.

Is this the "Strep" infection that is usually mentioned on the boards?

Our Pedi mentioned that these are obviously not any of the biggies that we need to worry about (PA, MRSA, etc.) but I was just curious if these are common bugs that CF'ers have to deal with and what is a typical course to get rid of them.

Thanks!

Alyssa has cultured both of those, I think they are pretty typical -- possibly even for non-CFers. Our clinic didn't treat them until there was an exacerbation of Alyssa's staph.

Hi Emily,

Yes, both of these are very common and may not even be treated if she was asymptomatic. But, since she is obviously not feeling well right now,(poor thing!), they'll treat with orals.

They found H Flu in Andrew's bronchoscopy the day he was admitted and told us that it responds very well to antibiotics and should resond to the other meds they were putting him on. He did not have to take anything extra to treat it. He had a culture done yesterday when his picc came out and I'll know if it showed up a second time. I'll let you know.

Good luck and I hope the two of you can get some rest tonight!

Here's a "stupid" question....

What does exacerbate mean?
