number of enzymes

Okay...just emailed our CF nurse asking about enzyme dosing. Ellie takes 8 - 9 "beads" of Pancrease MT4's (Lipase 4,000U, Amylase 12,000U, Protease 12,000U) with each feeding. She's still primarily on fortified formula as her amount of solid food intake is minimal. Tonight was the first time I actually saw oil separation in her stool, but they've always appeared greasy. The volume of food consumed hasn't increased, yet she's also having BM's 2 -3x times daily, up from 1 - 2x daily from a couple of weeks ago. Can one become "desensitized" to enzymes? I'm hoping the nurse will contact the CF nutritionist and get back to us soon!! FYI, she's severely PI. Any thoughts?

I am not sure what the term would be to define what happens. But Emily's dr has told us that her need for enzymes will likely increase over time, too. She takes a pretty low dose compared to some of the other kids here (one Creon10 for a snack, 2-3 with a meal) but since she started gaining and growing right away (3"+ in 6mo!) with this dose and her stools improved dramatically her dr wanted to keep her there until we see a need to increase. This is why we keep such close tabs on her stools and growth in relation to how many enzymes she takes w/ her food, so we can dose her accordingly.

The change in Ellie's bm's, in both frequency/consistency, could well be significant, but I'd want to be sure as well that it's not a brief thing brought on by not feeling well, etc. I hope you hear back soon!

Yes some people become "desensitized" (for lack of better words) & have to switch enzymes.

Since you are still doing beads & not full capsules I am not sure how much room you have before you are at the max on this particular enzyme.

Does she take prevacid or nexium to help the enzymes work better?
