Oil Spills, Smog and Lungs?

I just came back from about a week and a half in Florida about a hundred miles east of the oil spills. It was exceptionally muggy and humid, to the point where technology (my phone and my vest system) completely fritzed from (I assumed) the moisture, but aside from that I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

However I was just talking to someone who LIVES in Florida (Tampa/Orlando area) and she said that "The oil spill is making the air awful, they aren't saying it on the news but it's really effecting a lot of us, me included, I've had a cough for well over a week without any tickle or allergies or nasal relationship or anything. The air feels heavy and lots of neighbors and friends are having dizzy spells. It's bad down here."

Florida always makes me cough a lot because of the humidity (plus my vest mysterious stopped working while I was there [it's working now that I'm back in TN] so I was confined to Flutter alone) so extra coughing doesn't surprise me when I'm in Florida... and I was only there about a week and a half.

This friend of mine is a bit of a conspiracy theorist, so I'm curious to see if anybody on here has noticed anything of that sort? I'll be in the Tampa area the first week of July so I'm curious.

My son-in-law lives in Tampa. He said on his facebook page that they could smell the foul smell coming in from the west, and that it was probably from the oil.

I live in St. Petersburg and I personally haven't noticed any difference. I think the reason us CFers cough here more is b/c the humidity and salt in the air. I think it's a good thing though b/c it helps loosen the mucous just like in HyperTonic Saline.

YES !!! I don't know what to do...

Moved to Orange Beach, AL. from Cali in August, daughter has never been better. Lung function has risen from 75% in Cali to 95% here, partial collapse is gone, has not been hospitalized, 2 times on antibiotics since August 09. Huge improvement since Cali.

We live on the Gulf front in Orange Beach, always outside, swimming, surfing in the water. Since the spill my daughter has not been able to swim, other than our pool. She has been to the Dr. 6 times since spill, 2 rounds Bactrim, FEV1 down from 95% to 85% and that's after the 2 weeks Bactrim. She is sick now. I need to move, but cannot due to finances. I paid almost $10k to move here from Cali, can't find a job either.

All I want is to move, but can't and I KNOW her health has deteriorated as a direct result of the oil spill. Our beach is covered, cannot go swimming or surfing, smell the oil, cannot keep her inside 24/7.

I moved here for the fact the air quality is better than Cali, proven with her health from Aug 09 to May 10. Now the spill, now she is really sick and will probably be admitted next week.

What to do ?

I don't have any advice for ya but I wanted to say it's nice to see you here Gina. I think of Brea often as I fight my own battle with MRSA. I'm glad to hear she's been doing better in general.

Perhaps you could house swap with a New Englander? Not sure they'd want to come down unless they were interested in doing some humanitarian clean up work...worth googling. Why not post on Craigslist and see what you get? What do you have to loose if you don't have a job other than job searching time. Maybe you could find work in Boston and have an interview while up that way while staying in a Cape Cod cottage. Wouldn't that be lovely :)

Gina,

This may be completely insane, but have you tried contacting BP to see if they'd help you relocate? MAybe you can convince them it'd be good PR??? They sure need it!!!

We live in Slidell, LA, just north-east of New Orleans. I haven't noticed any kind of smell here and Izzy's been good but she's only 5 months old so we don't have a lot of history to compare to.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone

I hate getting involved in legalities, but at this point, my daughter's life depends on it and I have no way of affording to relocate again, not now anyway.

After speaking with friends, I have decided to contact BP and request for them to relocate us. After all, I moved here to improve my daughter's health, which initially happened, but since the spill her health has greatly deteriorated.

I appreciate everything and will keep you guys posted !

Happy 4th of July !!!
