First off......Jenn
I am an EMT so I have been a part of many codes, and I agree.......IT IS NOTHING LIKE TV. I have broken ribs on elderly people, and watched parents scream as you try to help their children. I have a hard time with DNR's though because most people don't realize that all it takes is one family member freaking out and saying "DO SOMETHING.......HELP HIM/HER that the DNR is no longer in effect. Once an immediate family member says so the DNR is no longer in effect and we have to do everything to try to save the patient. This REALLY bothers me.
Ok..........Courtney knows just about everything about CF. As a matter of fact we had another long discussion about it after we sat down and watched Amy's show on TV. I have given her the statistics on how long a CFer normally lives and what happens to the body as you age.
We try to keep a very upbeat attitude about it though. I tell her by taking care of herself, and a little bit of luck she could grow to be an old lady.
I told the girls about the show I watched last night and just bluntly asked them what they would want if something happened to them. They seemed okay with me asking. Courtney (13 with CF) immediately said she would not want life support. Lauren (15 no CF) said that she would want everything possible done. I did not ask my 11 year old son, I don't think he is ready to hear something like that.
