on-going fever's

Emily has had an issue with recurrent fevers for a long time too and it's really frustrating. Her thyroid function has been tested a few times and all came back OK there. Sometimes the runs of fever get more frequent and then culminate in an exacerbation; sometimes it seems random. Emily's CF dr talked to the ID dr at our hospital, they ran an immunology panel and a couple things are low- so they need to keep an eye on that over time- but otherwise I am not sure what else came of talking to the ID.
Emily's fevers are not high either (high 99's-low 101) but as basis for comparison I do occasionally check her temp when she is fine, and it is pretty consistently in the low-98's at those times, sometimes even lower. I started checking because I was starting to go nuts thinking her temp must just be high all the time, but it's not. When she looks & feels unwell, it really IS a fever. It takes a toll on her energy levels over time even when there aren't many other obvious symptoms.

I'm sorry I don't have much by way of great advice for you but just wanted to let you know we have had something very similar here for close to a year now.

There was a conversation on here earlier about fevers, b/c it seemed quite a few of us, ran "low" normally and so a fever of 99.5 felt like it should be 103 etc. Most of us though, had some form of NTM, though a few had PA etc... when was her last culture?

When my M.A. is acting up, I start running my low grade fevers daily.

How is her sputum? I guess if it was thicker or something then I would be more concerned, but it just sounds like something might be flaring up in there... though I am not for sure.

I do wonder if bacteria that is cultured makes a difference too. Kayla, who does run fevers, cultures MAC and Burkholderia Multivorans. I am sure that it plays a factor, although her dr hasn't backed up my theory

On a different note - a hyperactive thyroid is known to cause a higher than normal basal temp. This might be why she is a bit on the high side - due to the increased metabolism. Night sweats are very common in Hyperthyroid patients also.

Of course, infection and inflammatory processes are largely to blame for increased temps in cf patients, but if she runs high when well then I'd probably blame the thyroid.

Hope you get her sorted out very soon anyway. x

Thank you all! Well, turns out the endo doc says her thyroid levels weren't high enough to really treat so thats good news. But he wants me to keep a fever diary and see a rheumotologist. So far I am floored by her fevers. I have been taking them on a daily basis and about 4 days out of the week she has around 100 temp. The other days it can be normal (98.6) sometimes lower. Sometimes when she has this fever she complains about not feeling well but sometimes she says she feels fine. I will be glad to hear what the rheum. says.
