on-going fever's

Hey, I haven't posted in a while because I haven't had any questions and my 8 year old has had a pretty good winter! Her pft's have been good, 89-95%. She finally got in with a gi at musc and he did all kinds of test and found out her thyroid levels were high, so we are going to see an endocrinologist in Febuary. My concern is she is still running low grade fevers all the time. I mean, any time I take her temp. it is like 99-100. But really the only time I check is if she complains about not feeling well or has a headache, which is about once or twice a week. Noone can seem to figure out why she runs fever all the time. I also dont like her coloring. I know I might sound like a crazy momma, but she is pale with dark circles under her eyes. It's like I am looking at a very sick child but I dont know what to do about it! She has night sweats and itches alot but I lotion her down everyday. I know her asthma is under control, but why is she still so "sickly" looking? And, why the fevers? Thanks for listening to my rambling!

I get low grade fevers when my lungs are inflamed from coughing and producing a lot of mucous. Usually after the vest or PT is the worst but I discovered that after I coughed all the stuff up I felt was necessary, doing advair after the nebs brought down the inflammation and fevers so I don't feel so crappy and I could breathe a lot better. I would try to pay hard attention to when the fevers come on for her to see if it is the same situation.

Have you notified the doctor about this? Though 99-100 is not really a fever so its probably not a big deal. You should mention how she looks though when you call the doctor.

Hope she gets better!

My older daughter, Kayla, used to get what I called the 'mysterious CF fever'. Hers would spike up pretty high, over 102/103. But they would be without any other symptoms, and they would go away after a dose of tylenol. She would have them once or twice a week. That lasted a few months at a time. I mentioned it to her CF doc, but we never did anything about it. He said if it continued, then he would send her to an infectious disease specialist, but they stopped occuring so often.

My younger daughter has had a few lately, again with no other symptoms. Went away with tylenol, each time. And didn't occur again for about two weeks. I did mention it to her doc on Friday, and he wasn't happy that I didn't call him right away. He feels that being flu season (even though both girls had their vaccines) that a first sign of fever he wants to start Tamiflu just to be on the safe side.

my dd got fever spikes twice, and every time it turned out she got infected with PA (she never cultured it before), so maybe there is a bug that is causing your dd's fevers?

Thanks for the replies! She has had these ongoing fevers for about a year now, so I don't feel that it is the flu or anything like that. That's what makes it so hard to determine. Could her thyroid be causing fevers? It is hard to find any info about child thyroid problems. Thank you!

Emily has had an issue with recurrent fevers for a long time too and it's really frustrating. Her thyroid function has been tested a few times and all came back OK there. Sometimes the runs of fever get more frequent and then culminate in an exacerbation; sometimes it seems random. Emily's CF dr talked to the ID dr at our hospital, they ran an immunology panel and a couple things are low- so they need to keep an eye on that over time- but otherwise I am not sure what else came of talking to the ID.

Emily's fevers are not high either (high 99's-low 101) but as basis for comparison I do occasionally check her temp when she is fine, and it is pretty consistently in the low-98's at those times, sometimes even lower. I started checking because I was starting to go nuts thinking her temp must just be high all the time, but it's not. When she looks & feels unwell, it really IS a fever. It takes a toll on her energy levels over time even when there aren't many other obvious symptoms.

I'm sorry I don't have much by way of great advice for you but just wanted to let you know we have had something very similar here for close to a year now.
