Op/Ed to my hometown paper (on smoking laws)

Our community DID put it to a vote a few years ago and no smoking passed. Stand alone bars, which didn't allow people under 21 were allowed to have smoking.

Restaurants couldn't allow smoking unless they limited the age, which is what a few did; however, there were a couple bars (VFW) and a steakhouse, which claimed they didn't understand the new law, which they had supported, that they were losing charitable gaming money... So the City Council overturned it. Smoking is now allowed in restaurants again provided they have separate enclosed bars; however, a lot of these places are older buildings, so the smoke seeps in OR they leave the doors propped open because the air conditioning is too cool, so the wait staff doesn't have to open and close doors when serving the bar customers.. It's very frustrating. If a complaint is received, the police will drop off a copy of the law to the business and ask them to close the door.

Here in Scotland, No smoking in ALL public enclosed spaces has been banned since 26th March 2006. It is an absolute joy to be out and not have to look for the least smoky place to eat in ( and this is from me an ex smoker).
If you want any research on this or any facts and figures, they were worried about buisnesses going under, I'll have a look around and see if I can find something.

Good site this, lots of facts and figures, and testemonies.
Should say that the general health of Scotland has always been considered as very poor, my understanding is that the health is vastly improved in Scotland, of course there are other factors involved in that...but it helps enormously
