Oral Syringes -- update adapt-a-caps, too

When DS was first diagnosed the NICU sent us home with a bunch of medicine cups, oral syringes and tops. And I purchased a BUNCH of 1 ml, 5 ml and 10 ml over the years, along with caps. I still have enough of the bigger syringes, but with some of the stickier meds -- sandoz brand zithromax -- they act like glue and more recently a number of the caps have snapped off and broken. Also, why in the HECK are all the meds pink? Would like to find some amber colored syringes so I don't get confused. DH just wants to take a bunch of the syringes out to his man-cave and spray paint a stripe down them. Sigh! But I do need more tips and 1 m..

In the past I ordered from the squirrel store -- some group that feeds homeless baby squirrels, but heck, they had the individually wrapped baza brand with the blue tips.

Oral Syringes

I would just call around to the local pharmacies (if you haven't already <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> ) and see what they say. If you go in and show them what you want, they can <i>probably</i> order it for you.
I had a big handful of amber colored oral syringes, but I have have been trying to remember where I got them for the last year, and I just can't remember if they came from the doctor's office or the pharmacy (if it was the pharmacy, mine is a small, local one- sorry!). I know our walmart doesn't have them. DD is big enough now (no cf) and gets sick much more infrequently that the couple I have left are enough, so I haven't panicked yet.

"They" say that washing them in hot, soap water makes the rubber end quit sliding as well (I also had a few foster kittens that had to be syringe fed for a while, so I know a tiny bit about the frustration of having to use them a lot <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> ), but I want mine washed, so I have gone through a lot of them...

I've discovered that if one is getting "sticky", I can put some vegetable/olive oil on a paper towel, and then lay the rubber "stopper" on it's side and turn it to put a thin coat of oil on the outside of the rubber part only (<i>not </i>on the part that will touch the medicine) and I can get a few more uses out of one by doing that.

Good luck on the Great Syringe Search! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Oh, and ask you pharmacy (if it's local) if they can "compound" his meds into different colors. It's worth a shot! (I'm sure that somewhere out there, there is a little boy who doesn't want to take "pink girl medicine" and it's been done before <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> ).

I stocked up at "the squirrel store" a couple of years ago after I conducted a local pharmacy search. The B-D ones with the rubber tip that I got from the hospital, just don't last as long as the ones with the blue plastic tip -- heck, those last forever -- if it weren't for the sticky zithromax, I'd usually end up throwing the syringes away when I couldn't read the letter anymore.

I measure up DS's meds every night us 12 oral syringes each time. Mainly I'm running out of the caps and with the addition of a new pink med twice a day, I thought it'd be nice to order up some amber ones.
