Organ donors...

In my above answer, I assumed you meant donate as for the purpose of transplantation. That is something we can't do, with the exceptions already mention. Sometimes we can't even donate blood or plasma because of CF (especially if you're anemic). But donating as a way to further research is something we can do.

My father donated his body to science (non CF).

Though something to remember if you do this:
we were told that they can keep the body for up to 2 years,
and will let the family member know when they are done with it.
This means that family members will have to deal with your loss
all over again.
You can't be buried/cremated until they are finished.

So that is something that the family members need to be aware of before hand, so it's not a surprise.

I think it's a great gift.

Allie's Ry donated his corneas when he died, and some little girl wrote Allie a letter to tell her thank you because she can see now. So I know you can donate, it's just very limited as to what they'll take, because most of our insides are garbage.

I've heard of CFers who were waiting for lungs and ended up donating their hearts when they got them! Its easier to transplant lungs and a heart all at once since they are all connected, so sometimes they do that and use the CFer's healthy heart for someone else. COol huh? It would be awesome to be a living heart donor!

I'm pretty sure skin and corneas are ok, as well as heart valves (depending on their condition, of course). I'm not sure about other organs, but I think that sometimes 'less than perfect' ones can be donated to older or more complex patients. For example, a kidney with cysts could sometimes be donated to an elderly dialysis patient because if it lasts 5 years, that's good enough.

I have a donor card so they can take what they can, and my family know that I'm happy for the rest of my body to go to research.

I want anything that can be used for research to be utilized. I may be melodramatic but I say, "use what you can and burn the rest." I may not be a help to CF'rs but maybe a help to other illnesses. Maybe giving my orgrns will save a lfe...who knows?

One important thing to remember about organ donation in the US is that the next of kin is really the one to make that decision upon your death. Although a scary and taboo subject to bring up at the dinner table, all families should discuss what they want done upon their death. You can have "I want to be an organ donor" tattoed on your ass and it won't make a difference if your next of kin says no.

I would love to donate something when I go, because somebody gave me lungs, I feel like I should give back too. Corneas are a good idea I think.
