We started doing cpt on ds when he was about a week old. We were given the rubber percussors; however, his doctor felt hands were better as one always has hands. Percussors can be misplaced. The RTs taught us using our index and middle finder to start -- directly below collarbone, mid chest, armpits, upper back and lower back. DS would bounce pretty good on our laps and we'd set off the alarms in the NICU <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

IMO, contact the clinic or hospital and ask if you can come in and have someone go over cpt with you. We were give an step by step hand out, plus being that ds was in the nicu for 4 weeks and hospital for another 2, we had the rts watch us and give us pointers. It actually calmed him and he'd fall asleep. He's 6 and it still does if I do cpt at night instead of using the vest.

My son was diagnosed at 3 weeks and we were told to use our hands and not afraid to use force. We later requested a percussor cup, but i feel we do it by hand more effectively. We also were not given much instruction. I don't think the PT at our clinic is very good. My son is now 9 months old and doing well. Good luck!

As for the nasty cough, have they done a culture to see if/what she may be growing? With DS he rarely coughs unless he's coming down with something. IMO, it'd be a good idea to get that cough checked out and if they try to tell you "they cough, it's what they do" RUN! Past experience with DS and it turned out he had bronchitis and was culturing enterbactor choclae -- a common bug found in nicu's due to improper hand washing and fecal matter. Bleah!

We used the infant mask in the beginning and just put tape over the hole. I felt confident that it did the job...much better than what my hands were doing!! Just try all the suggestions and do what works best for you.

blessings,
missa
