My 4 year old daughter is not gaining weight. she hasn't gained a pound since last nov. our physician is recommending a feeding tube for her.

i am apprehensive and scared - because i don't know what to expect or if it's the right decision.

can you guys tell me what to expect as far as getting the feeding tube and daily care/routine?

any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
melissa

Both my boys have had theirs for 4 years and although it is extra work with set-up and clean-up, it is SO worth it!

AFter the surgery and recovery issues, it is just a matter of filling bags, wrapping the tube through a small pump and hooking up the extention tube to your child. It pumps overnight. When finished, disconnect and rinse out the extention tubing. The bags get thrown away.

We've only had two problems. One, the tubing sometimes gets loose and the formula leaks out on the bedding. YUCK

The other was one son got granulation tissue around the g-tube hole. It was taken care of right away and he hasn't had any problems since.

I would definately recommend it! I'm sure you'll hear from other parents too. PM me if you have any questions.

From what I have heard, I would say go for it.

My 6 yr old has one. We don't use it normally as he maintains weight well when healthy; but we are intending to leave in as a backup.

It is nice knowing that in a pinch you can keep him fed and weight up if you need to.

Is she seeing a pediatric GI specializing in cf? They are an excellent resource for weight gain help. The GI has prescribed megace for my daughter twice in the past yr. Both times she has gained 4 pounds. My daughter also got a g-tube 15 months ago. That also has been a huge help. My daughter has gained 18 pounds, from -5% bmi to 75% now. The idea of a feeding tube is much scarier than the actual thing.
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 6 and Jack, 4 both with cf
