I went through the same worries with my son last year. He is 10 now and it was a good thing to do. I somewhat wish that we had done it earlier but neither his mother or I wanted to do it. After several attempts to boost calories and get him to eat a lot (and lots of frustration), Parker had a g-tube put it and it really worked out well (or at least it has so far). There are not the limitations on activity as I thought there would be (he played baseball this spring and I was a little concerned when he would slide but there were no problems). There are lots of people who can help with pratical advice. It really helped me out a lot. For my son, the tube is a great idea. I do not see him needing the tube forever...just until he is past needing to grow (30 or 40 or something like that) but then again it gives us some options. Good luck and feel free to PM questions or ask for anything.

I totally agree the G-tube is well worth it. I was worried about my son having one and really it is no big deal. We hook him up at night for 9 hours and it has helped with his weight gain. He had went 1 1/2 years with his weight going up and down the same pound. Since his tube was placed 1 yr and 4 months ago he has now gained 13 pounds and you don't have to worry as much about what they are "not" eating. My son has never had an appetite- he is not a good eater so the tube has done wonders. He got the tube when he was 6 yrs old and I wish he would of gotten it sooner. Other than the tube sometimes leaking because the valve comes open and one time he pulled out the tube accidentally he has had no issues. I actually replaced it myself with a new one and it has been fine. Just be sure to keep a new one on hand if that should happen. Our hospital is 2 hours away so it is easier for us to replace. My son gets pediasure put in his tube, which seems to be different than most people.

Good luck with your decision.

What is megace? she was placed on cyproheptadine for awhile - it didn't work on her appetite and made her pretty sleepy.

We have a referral out to a GI physician, I'm hoping for some more ideas and help.

thank you all for your thoughts and for sharing your experiences.

i will be relieved when the food stops being such an issue for us. it is a source of frustration and is hard for my daughter because she is just not hungry and we are pushing so much food on her - she can't stand it.

i don't want her to feel bad about the g-tube and i don't want her to feel 'different'...have your children dealt with any of those types of emotions?
