Oxygen question

I have been really hesistant to post on here a question but I don't know where else to ask. I had a pretty big set back on Thanksgiving that lead to me being intubated. I am now home but I am on oxygen. 2-4 liters.

I went for my follow up and I was told that I need to stay on the o2 until pulmonary rehab can determine that I can walk without my oxygen levels going down,

My issue is, when I am on the compressor, which has a 30 foot extension, even turned up to 5 liters, I feel like I can't breathe well. I have a ton of the green canisters in all different sizes and two to three liters works great. Does anyone have expereince with this? My compressor was checked not that long ago and they didn't say it wasn't working, I have not been on o2 in a very long time but I don't remember feeling this way before.

Any advice

Do you have a home oximeter? Perhaps you need to check and see what your SATs are running when you are on that 30ft. extension. It should run the same as when it's on a shorter line. This is the only idea I have, sorry.

I hope you figure out what's going on with that.

You know that is funny, Im on a 20 ft cord at 2 L and there are a lot of times where I stlll feel super short of breathe and LIKE my sats should be down... but I'll check with sat monitor and the sats are right where they need to be...

I wonder if its b/c its the concentrator and less pure form of oxygen than in the canisters?

PS: I am sorry to read about your Turkey day .... and your non cf diagnosis... I am praying you get some answers for your mental health as well as your physical health.

The green canisters are 100% oxygen. Home concentrators do not produce 100% oxygen, they produce somewhere in the mid 90% range to be acceptable. If your concentrator is not working correctly this number could be less. I'd call your provider and have them come out and see what percentage oxygen it is producing.

Thanks, I feel so much better on the green canister. I am so incredibly frustrated that I am back to square one with not being able to walk and keep my sats up. I mean I was just fine, I had this incident and I can't bounce back. I have to try Pulmonary Rehab.

I am going to call the company tomorrow. I need new green tanks because I am going through them so fast.

Thank you so much for your advice. Don't be sorry for my non cf dx, I am happy about it. This year has been one of the most emotionally high and low years of my life and I am just looking forward to some peace and restoration in 2011

The problem with long hoses is that they have resistance in them, and that cuts down on the oxygen flow. Think of a really long garden hose - by the time you drag it clear across the yard, there isn't the flow out of it that you had back at the tap, is there? Resistance to flow in the hose itself cuts it down. Put two hoses together, and the water barely dribbles out.

Check your sat level with an oximeter when wearing the cannula, and then again with a shorter cannula and a tank. You may well not be getting enough. You might be better to have small O2 tanks placed strategically around the house that you can hook a short cannula to instead of a huge snake running from a concentrator a long ways away.
