pain and illness support group

I'm starting a face-to-face chronic pain and illness support group here in Denver (web page here:www.c-mockingbird/snail.html, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or experiences or suggestions that might help me out.

Like, should I have a topic each week, or just let it play out on its own?

If you've ever been in a support group, what has worked for you and what hasn't?

I'm not too experienced, but I would suggest keeping it structured...having a topic of sorts.

I was in a group once, meeting weekly, we had a book to read and were assigned "homework" -so that our one meeting lasted all week. Then the next week our moderator would follow up on our homework and we'd discuss how it went. I think there were be an occasion of no particular topic, it was "open mic"

Best wishes with it all !!!

Jarod, Good luck with your group. I'm wondering how you would handle other CFers coming to the group. In my job I facilitate an HIV support group. I checked with my CF doctor and the doctor who cares for many people in our community with HIV to see if there was any concern about our being together in a meeting. Seems that HIV and CF attract different bacteria. Anyway, although I was a facilitator I found there was a lot of talk in the group that I could relate to - being sick, worry about the future, money for treatment and the ever presence of illness and need for diligence in medication, etc. We did not have set topics each week, though that might be helpful to guide the discussion among people with different illnesses.
Please check in and let us know how it goes.
