"Evil Beast" indeed!

Oh man....it's pure misery!

I've had it on three occasions. First episode was years ago. I'd been admitted to the hospital after contracting the flu. I got a nasty lung infection and went in for iv's. They gave me some oxygen and started antibiotics and I felt so much better. After a couple days on iv antibiotics though, I developed pancreatitis. The dr. on call at the time (my doc went out of town) said no way would the meds cause it. I never believed him. I came out feeling so much worse than when I went in!

Then last year I began a month long dose of cipro (which I'd taken on & off for years). Two weeks into it I developed pancreatitis. The pain was just like the first episode...awful. I stayed in bed and only drank water and took pain meds till it passed.

My last episode also occurred about 2 weeks into a month long dose of oral antibiotics. This time it wasn't cipro, but a combo of rifampin and another med I can't recall right now.

My body just seems to have changed and isnt' tolerating the oral meds much. I'm allergic to penicillins & sulfa drugs & with these reactions, I'm really limited by the oral meds I can tolerate. I'm finishing my first round of tobi this week and so far haven't had any problems with it (Thank God). I don't want to do iv's every time I need an antibiotic, but if tobi doesn't work for me, that'll be my only option.

Interesting article mom2lillian, I had never heard the relations between pancreatitis & mild cases either. I do drink occasionally (mostly wine), but didn't have any on these occasions.

I'm not sure about the crfd connection. Diabetes runs rampant in my mom's family. I try to stay pretty low carb with my diet and on the last occasion, I had really "splurged" and had too much sugar along with the meds. I probably put my pancreas into overdrive with the combo.?

I just pray I never get it again (or any of you!)!!

as a child I got it a # of different summers, once I stubled across a blurb on pancreatitis a light bulb went off, it was as if I was reading about my 'summer terrors'. I am assuming not enough to drink as a kid and the fact I was always running around outside (tomboy).

The two times as a teen were A-when I was 14, it was summer, and started working at McDonald's -- go figure all that fat and caffeinated beverages I was gladly consuming that I was NOT used to and B-when I was 16 and started driving and my boyfriend and I were always driving somewhere to eat taco bell etc and I had discovered iced tea and was drinking it or mountain dew constantly and never water since I didnt 'like it' back then.

I have not had an attack as an adult and I dont think it is a coincidence that I, for the most part, watch what I eat and drink tons and tons of water and partake in almost no caffeine.

OMGosh Paws! Having to deal with pancreatitis "as a possible side effect" of oral meds, that is frightening.

And Nicole, LOL on your diagnosis, McDonalds + Taco Bell = pancreatitis.

But you know, you are probably right on the money. The high fat and caffeine will do it. It's a good thing that you made the connection to avoid any more episodes of pancreatitis.

For me I'm convinced it's a hydration issue since I eat a good low fat diet for my CFRD. I drink tons of water and as a result, never stray too far from a bathroom either.

I have been plagued with pancreatitis up until little over a year ago. I used to get an attack of it about every year-- especially before my diagnosis. For me food would tip it off (very fatty foods). I did two have horrible episode with no food/medicine connection-- crawling on all fours to the bathroom vomiting and lying on the floor screaming in agony.

A little over a year ago I had a mind-blowing, life altering attack of pancreatitis. I ended up in the emergency room on strong pain meds only to be send home on pain meds and liquid diet. Two days later I was back in the emergency room in level 10 pain and it took 2 hours for the pain meds to affect me. Long story short I had a number of gall stones. The gall stones were causing my pancreas some major problems (infection developed). Once they removed my gall bladder and the stones I have not had a problem with pancreatitis since (just bathroom problems).
