For me, that was due to low blood sugar. I used to wake up out of nightmares, heart racing, unable to go back to sleep. Treating the low blood sugar cured me of such episodes.

I get them occasionally at night-- I get them when I am short of breath at night. I also get them when life gets to be too much (mental overdrive). I do meditation and controlled breathing and hubby will rub my hand or arm to calm me down (trick my mom learned when I was little).

i get these whenever i have to have a medical procedure such as IV stick or PICC placement. i've also gotten them after being extremely anxious for a public speaking event (it actually happens to me AFTER the speech, when i let my guard down). i think they're relatively normal. my docs have even said people with heart/lung issues are at heightened risk for them and feel panicy much more easily cause we are so very aware all teh time of our breathing and when one little thing is "off" we stress severely over it.

hope you find some relief. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
