My son without Cf has to do a paper for science class about a genetic disease.  He picked CF.  He already knows ALOT about CF but I have kept certain things about CF like life expectancy, lung transplant, on the "down low".
He has already started research on the project at school , so he likely came across alot of scary info.  I guess now is the time to broach these subjects.....Any advice how?

UGH -- this isn't going to be fun. I think I'd go for a very direct honest approach, but be brief unless he asks a lot of questions. I think I'd emphasize the idea that 40 years ago the life expectency was so young, and it has grown so dramatically in all this time. Then if he asks more you can fill in where he wants more.

He might already know about life expectancy. I said to him when he said he picked CF that to please be careful because alot of info about CF can be outdated. I pushed him toward the info on the CFF website, he has a good understanding, explaining the CFTR and treatments. He said "mom I don't even nee to look up the stuff about meds and nebs and VEST, I already know all about that" One thing brought up was he didn't know CF babies could taste salty. That made me smile. I did email his science teacher just saying if anything comes up let me know, that it can be upsetting since his sister has CF. But he seems ok; actually he has been REALLY nice to Maggie so I think he's really putting things together. I think it's different when things are day to day CF stuff, but then to look stuff up as a kid and have research and doctors saying all sorts of scary things; it could really affect him.
