Hi there,
I am 31, have CF and CFRD and also have a 6 yr old daughter. It definitely is harder to take of one's self when there is a child. I also have a wonderful husband when it comes to our daughter. When I'm not feeling well...he takes care of her. When I've been in the hospital, he takes care of things around the house such as laundry, dishes, vacuuming, etc. Overall, though, I am a pretty healthy CFer...when it comes to the lungs. But without my husband, I dont know what I would do. Take care....sounds like we have some things in common.

Hi,
My pfts are in the high 60s to low 70s range....they have remained the same for well over 5 yrs. They did not decrease during my pregnancy...in fact they increased! It was the healthiest that I have ever been...except for the blood sugars toward the end. I did not have diabetes before the pregnancy. 6 months after I had my daughter....I was diagnosed with it. I started with insulin because my numbers were in the 600 range...but then after I got them under control, I was able to switch to oral meds...and have taken them ever since. I carried my daughter pretty low...so it didnt seem to have the affect on the lungs...which I was very grateful for! I even gained 17 lbs! LOL..that was a BIG thing for me. I was closely watched throughout the whole pregnancy...I saw a high risk OB-GYN and they did ultrasounds each month to make sure the baby was doing well. I guess to get back to the original question...(sorry-got off track), my daughter is the one who keeps me going. Every day I wake up....I know I have to be there for her...so I try to stay as healthy as I can.....she is my inspiration! I wouldnt trade it for anything in the world! Take Care!

Dea,
This is WAY off the subject, but what oral meds are you taking for the CFRD? I take Prandin, but wondered what others may be taking.

Hi dea and all.
wendy here i am the one with the 5 year old son i replied earlier but realised that im still down as anonymous. i have just got my pc and i am trying to figure it out so all this web stuff is quite new. i used to do computing but gave up but now iv got a new hobby while my son is at school. as i said i am insulin dependant diabetic, i have had a bad year which has scared me especially as being a mum is the most important thing to me in this world my pregnancy was quite good although my diabetes was a problem i was having a lot of hypoglycemic attacks and went into my first coma when i was 12wks in2 my pregnancy that was scary but my husband coped very well and now knows when im about to have one. after nearly 8years of marriage he does loads of things to help me with all chores and i may add that up2 about a year ago washing pots and pans were not to his liking. but there not many men who put up with all the coughing up sputum being sick and when you feel so yucky after coughing all your gluck up they still give you that cuddle and kiss. wev been together 10years. best years of my life we went throu alot to become pregnant i had to have fertility treatment to help i had a few courses of a tablet called clomid, but i had mixed emotions when i found out i was finally pregnant in august 98 as i had just lost my very close friend who died of CF, as i had already lost her sister and my older sister to CF 7years previous so as i get older life does get harder but im lucky to have my son who makes life worth living all the more. my current stay in hospital isnt yet over as im basically on paroll!! (thats what it feels like) back in two weeks.
Take Care Wendy xText

Hi Wendy,
I'm so sorry that you have lost a sis and friends to CF...it makes me so sad. I also have a brother (24) with CF and a sis (29) without. Everyday I wish I could take it away from my brother because when I see him not doing well...it scares me to death. It has just been over the last year that I have met more ppl with CF and have made some great friends. It is a bond that we all share. I agree with you when you said your son makes life worth living all the more. My daughter is the reason I stay strong! I'm sorry to hear you've not had a good year. Hospitals are definitely like a jail...(LOL) I've had a really rough year with my sinuses. I got a bad sinus infection in April...went through courses of oral antibiotics and even ended up with a picc line for ivs. I ended up getting a blood clot in the picc so now I'm on coumadin to help get rid of the clot..and to top it all off...the iv antibiotics didnt work either! My sinus tissue is destroyed and it needs to be removed. They cant do surgery until I am off the coumadin (blood thinner) for fear of bleeding too much! My CF doc says that could be anywhere from 3 to 6 mos. In the meantime I still have the sinus infection...and a HUGE headache on a daily basis. They are now getting so bad again that they make me sick to my stomach. I've tried so many different things for the headaches and nothing works. I cant really take pain pills because I work...and pain pills make me loopy. I have to be careful about other meds that I take because so many meds interact with coumadin. So.....for now...its a waiting game. Take Care!

This is in reply to the original post. I've got CF, am 25, and my daughter is almost 2 1/2. She's the light of my life also. I found that my pregnancy was also very healthy. My PFT's also increased during. I've misspoken a few times here on the boards about my PFT's. They are in the mid-80's FEV1 (I mistook the FVC for the FEV1 previously, but I've got it straight now - oops). My sugars were monitored closely because I'd had diabetic reactions to some meds in the past, but I had no trouble at all. Thank the Lord. I saw a high-risk OB at first, but was unhappy with that. My particular situation (with Medicaid) did not allow me to choose one single doctor but tossed me into a pool of residents. I was not getting very good care and they insisted upon treating me like a paragraph from a text-book rather than as a person with an individual case of CF. So, after weighing the pros and cons and determining my pregnancy to be very healthy and not risky, we found a midwife. She was great and did a lot of research. I continued to keep very close tabs with both the OB and my CF doc until I delivered. I went into labor 2 weeks past due date (which was never very certain) and delivered at home without complication. It was awesome. This is by no means for everyone, but it was perfect for us.
Being a mom has made me create new solutions to old problems and restructured my priorities. One of my biggest struggles was with my doctors when it came to breastfeeding. They didn't like it. But, baby is healthy and I've stayed healthy. Of course, if I had gotten really ill or been unable to maintain weight I'd have had to rethink it. I think it was actually easier to parent an infant as a mom with CF than it is to parent a toddler. She's no longer content to just sit while I do my vest and nebs. That's where good videos have come in handy. I put on a 30 min. one and that covers exactly the length of my vest tx. I've also incorporated brisk walks into my therapy since I can plop her into the stroller and go. We'll walk briskly a good length to a nice park, then she'll play, then we get another brisk walk home. This was a problem when I had a round of IV's because the sweat I worked up walking loosed the op-site tape and I had leaking/gapping. the rest of the time it seems ok. Walking was something I did a lot of when pregnant. I'd walk (albeit, not briskly) for about an hour each afternoon. When it got warm, I walked in the mall or other large places with AC.
Sorry. I didn't start out to write so much. I guess I didn't realize how much I like to talk about life as mom or how much it's changed me.
