Patiently Waiting..........

My daughter is 6 mo old. She weighs 11lbs. She sounds a lot like the other kids on here that I'm reading about. She had an abdominal U/S and the sweat chloride test today. I am anxiously waiting for the dr's office to call. I'm at a loss right now. I have two other small children who have been "shoved aside" for the past six months because "sissy is sick." How do you cope? How do you balance it all? My husband tries and does the best he can. I work 40hrs on the weekend and don't know how I'm going to be able to work if the results come back positive. I am really stressed right now and don't know what to do. I've already gone through the "what I am I doing wrong" phase. Now it's the "what can I do to make her feel better phase." As I type, she is lying in the bed next the computer desk crying like she always does. I just want to find out what's wrong with her so we can take the next step.

Being stressed, feeling helpless, wondering how in the world are you going to cope - these are all normal and I'm sorry I don't have any answers for you but time will help, I promise.

Now for the reality of getting through the next 6 months or so: first of all, if you do get a CF diagnosis this will mean treatments that should help your baby feel better immediately. This will have a trickle down effect - you will feel better. Lean on any one you can - seek and ACCEPT help wherever you can find it, including counseling if you feel you need it.

CF wise, don't focus on anything but the specific symptoms your daughter is exhibiting and how to treat those. Then stop reading - there is plenty of time to deal with the what-ifs later.

Balancing is tough, and we personally have let the unimportant stuff fall to the wayside out of necessity. Our house is a wreck and we eat take-out food more than we should. But we are still a family and we have lots of love for each other.

Okay this turned out really long, but obviously I needed some therapy of my own today. Please let us know what the results are. I am hoping for the best for you and that you get answers soon.

mamacas, I'm so sorry that you are going through this, but know that you are not alone. If it is cf you have come to the right place, there is tons of support here from people who truly understand how you feel. Take a deep breath and tell yourself that everyting will work out okay. Try not to play the "what if" game just yet. (I know it's hard) Take one day at a time and before you know it things will be better. Wish I had some better words of wisdom for you. When I get really stressed out from my daughter's cf I try to do something silly like one day we covered the kitchen table with a blanket and made a tent. Then me and all 3 of my girls crawled under it with snacks and played a game we like to call "if I had a million dollars" and we tell what we would do with the money. Sounds silly but it helps lighten the mood. (We also like to identify clouds) Keep us posted on your daughter. Hugs<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Have you gotten the results yet? I too am sitting here waiting. I also have two older children that are ( I feel) being forgotten because we are on the hunt of some mysterious, random illness. If you need to chat write back.

mamacas - Hi I have a 10 yr old boy w/cf. When he was 6 months he only weighed 13 pounds - 7 lbs when born. We took him to a city doctor because of weight loss and looked like he was struggling to breath and had a cough - and he guessed cf right away. We took him to be tested and was told that day that he did have cf. We were devastated - but at least we finally new what was wrong. He had been in the hospital at 8 weeks old too - but they never caught it then. But I will say that 1st year has been our worse. Now he gets along pretty good. Of course I still wish he didn't have cf - as all of us do I'm sure! He does his treatments daily, takes his meds and the rest of the time he's an active and happy boy. Let us know how things go and if we can help!
