Perhaps a dumb question ;) Mouthpiece vs. mask

Emily had a breathing tx the other night using a neb and mask that she's never had before. She liked the mask, I think because she did not have to hold it. It looked kind of like the bubbles mask but attached to the neb on the bottom and the duoneb was done in 5min.

Anyway, my question is this- a lot of the mist came out of the holes in the mask- does this make the tx less effective than using the mouthpiece? Wouldn't this waste a lot of the medication? Emily liked the mask and asked me to get her one, and I will get her a couple bubbles masks to fit her pari nebs (I have no idea what this neb is the disposable version of but looks nothing like the pari) but not if it's going to compromise her tx.

You will get different opinions on this. I know our clinic recommends the mouthpiece. My kids have always used the bubble the fish mask and will continue to do so. We took them to the Minnesota clinic when they were babies. They recommend the mask
because it helps the sinuses too. So we have continued with the mask since it easier for then as well.

Our clinic explained to us that yes, you do get a less effective inhalation using the mask. I dont think it would be major and wouldn't worry too much about it.

We use the mouthoiece and i have noticed that when she exhales, there is a consderable amount of mist that comes our through her nose. So i assume it gets in their sinuses, that way as well. It kind of looks like when (smokers) blow smoke out from their noses.

I guess in the end, as long as they do thier neb either way it doesn't matter.

I wonder if it was really pouring out too because it wasn't one of the valved nebs like the pari- I assume less would be wasted with a good Pari neb.

Good point about the sinuses. She uses albuteral, pulmacort and pulmozyme... in case that matters for any of the recommendations that have been given to any of you.

My dd has always used the bubbles mask w/ pari neb and there is some mist but the few times we have let her use the mouth piece the venting that comes out during exhale is a lot also. Also, the few times that she has used the mouthpiece I think her jaw gets tired of holding it in her mouth and she has to take breaks which also wastes the medicine. Like has been said before, you will definately get mixed responses so I think it just boils down to preference. We prefer the mask. Oh and btw, dd is on xopenex, pulmozyme and TOBI.

My son who is 9 has always done the masks. They recommend the mouthpeice but we have tried it and he hates it and I actually think he does better with the mask.
