MY FEV1 is not that low yet, but I couldn't imagine giving up my dog for adoption. I think that the walking has actually helped with my CF and she's just a great mood booster. If you don't have allergies the hair could be the only potential problem and it seems by the dog you have own (sans akita) shed too much (although I know it seems like alot more) and even so if you vacuum often that shouldn't be a problem (even with cats). Since they are not inside/in your bed all the time that is probably good too. I am not sure how it would affect someone with an FEV1 of 40%, but I am like 65 and I see no difference from when I am here at Duke and when I am home with my dog (over the summer).
