PFTs after transplant

<P>I am exactly 6 weeks out of surgery and my fev1 is 56% and has been and has been as low as 48%, i was expecting it be much higher (90-100%) after transplant.  i havent missed a dose of anything and excersize more than most other people that are 6 weeks out of surgery (jogging and walking, and some weights in PT), am i just being impaitient? or should i get used to being around 56%.  (not complaining too much since i was at 18% before tx).   it is still frusterating because most of the things i see and read are about people who have lung function in the 90s after transplant, is this false advertising???? or does it just take longer than i had hoped ?</P>
<P> </P>
<P>and yes i know each case is different, but was anyone else in the same boat as me ?</P>

With many people fev1 still goes up for a long time. Centers say it is normal to still go up until one year post.
Others still see it go up for 2 years.

I think 6 weeks a little early to be afraid it won't be higher.

Very well done for already being able to go jogging 6 weeks post :)

@ mCHRISTofSUBURB..

Mine Fev1 was similar to yours. I didn't even get mine measured until 3 or 4 weeks post tx. I had some minor issues and they didn't want me blowing hard for a few weeks. My first PFT was in the 40's. After that it continued to rise and now at 12 months post I am 85-95 percent.

Dont worry about your Fev1 too much at that early stage. Your rib cage has been through a very traumatic ordeal and it takes at least 4-6 months for it to repair properly and become flexible again. I am 25 years old and 2 years post transplant and my Fev1 is the best its ever been at 79%. My Fev1 was very similar to yours immediately post transplant and has gone up very slowly over the past 2 years with a couple of hiccups along the way. I exercise A LOT and pretty much do all i can to get my lung function up around 90% but it seems to be going up slowly. Be patient but keep working hard as you will see improvement.

Is this typical? I too would expect FEV1 to go up <90% within two or three months. What are the chances that it would go up that high that fast?

Thanks.

I was told it takes about a year to get the full effect of the transplant. I'm 4 months out and my FEV1 is 90%, it was 65% when I was discharged.

My FEV1 was a slow starter but now I have continued to climb. I will be at 1 year on January 8 and my o2 sat level remains at between 94 and 100 %. Don't have my latest FEVs as I am currently moving to a new home. Take care of your lungs and follow your treatment teams advice and your life will be so much improved you won't recognize it. Good luck. Kaiser Willy

Don't worry about your FEV1. I thought they were going to be super high as well after my transplant, but it does take time for your body and lungs to get used to everything. Granted, from what my PFTs were the day of my transplant and what they were my first clinic visit after I got out of the hospital it was a huge difference, 13% to 50%, my doctors told me it would take a few weeks if not months for my PFTs to get high again. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
