Hey! I'm getting ready to go into Cardnal Glenen hospital. I'm really scared. they say that they're going to put a Pic Line into my hand artery and run it up my arm and down to a main artery by my Heart. I really need some more info on this Pic Line stuff. and if there're are some teens that are at that hospital that I could talk too about this. Any info would be helpfull. This is the first time that I've ever been in the Hospital for this excepct when I was diagnosed with it. I have to stay there for 3 to 7 days. I know I sound like a wimp and other people are worse off than I am. There's a first time for every thing I gusse. I'm just trying to learn every thing that I can before I go in.

Thanks,
Kayla

Although I have never had one....my son who is 3 now has had about 4. You can ask for a med called versite (sp) It is a calming med to help you from not being soooooooooo jumpy and it acts as a amensia med. They also put some numbing med on the site where the needle goes. The good thing about pic lines is they last a lot longer & you can usually go home w? them in for your home ivs. Thats what we do all the time. Atleast you know when you get to come home. Whenever my son goes in we always wonder that!!! You'll be fine although you dont get a picc line EVERY day...they put them in 100x a day!!! Hope this helps any other ques. please ask!!!

I had my first picc line when I was 30 & honestly I was a nervous wreck because I didnt know what to expect. It went well & I got use to it. I have had a few since then & although I dont look forward to them, I dont get as nervous as that first time. It might seem overwhelming because they have to keep things as sterile as possible so equipment draped & everyone will have masks etc. The last 2 times I had them in it was done a bit differently. The used a sonogram type machine to look at my veins BEFORE poking to see which way was best & then used it to guide the line in. The also put stitches in to hold it.....the stitches did cause a bit of discomfort for a few days & then I was fine.....I breathe thru everythint to stay calm!

Hello Kayla, there is no need for you to feel like a wimp, although there are other people out there worse off than you are, this is your first time and it's scary because you don't know what to expect; it's all new. The first time I went into the hospital since I had been diagnosed at 9months old was not even a year ago and I was scared and nervous and also felt like a wimp, lol. You are perfectly allowed to feel the way you do, I think we all did when we first experienced something new. But anyways, onto the picc line!
I've had two picc lines and both were put in right above my elbow and down to the artery near the heart. For mine they used a sonogram machine to find where to put it, they numbed up the area, then there are some pokes, pressure and of coruse a little bit of pain, but it really wasn't so bad. Then they slide the picc line in, which doesn't hurt at all; I didn't even feel it going in through the vein (and when it gets pulled out they don't numb it at all, they just pull it out and you really don't feel anything and it definitely doesn't hurt). Now I've never had any stitches to hold it in like Melissa has. The end bit of the line was put in a stat lock (I think it's called) and put some gauze over it (cause it bleeds a little bit after you first get it) and then they put a clear sticky sheet over it to cover it and also hold it in place as well.
The first line I had I couldn't use my arm for about 3 days because it hurt to move my arm. It kind of felt like there was a huge bruise on it and it was just very sore. However, the second time my arm was perfectly fine; wasn't sore at all.
Oh, and when they have put it in they do an x-ray to see how far in it is, because they obviously don't want it to go in too far. The second line I had I noticed that when I lay on my left side (the picc was in my left arm) my heart would skip beats occassionally. It turns out that when I turned to my side the picc line would move just far enough that it would "tickle my heart" But it was easily fixed, all they do is pull it out a little bit. But I doubt that will happen.
So yeah, I have to say my experience with picc lines has actually been pretty good, it's much better than being poked over and over again with a regular IV needle. I hope your trip to the hospital leaves you feeling great, it really helped me out a lot. Oh and with a picc line, if they need to draw blood from you they can do it straight from the picc line! Yay, one less poke! Sorry this got to be so long, hope it was somewhat helpful! Take care!

I had a picline this summer.....it's scary at first but it's not that painful and you'll get used to it very quickly

Oh AND they won't poke you a thousand times for blood and if they try refuse and tell them to draw blood through the pic! a pic line is much safer for you veins.....regular IVs if used for a long period of time with strong meds will collapse your veins
good luck

I have a pic line in rite now at my house im getting home iv. i stayed awake when i got the pic line and it wasnt bad at all. the pic line is alot easer than a normal iv. im 11 years old and i was scared when i went to get the pic line 3 days ago but then it wasnt as bad as i thought it was going to be. you wont realy feel anything, if they put the numming stuff on your arm. request that to the person putting it in. but the numming stuff hasta stay on your arm for an hour before putting the pic line in.

HI KAYLA, MY DAUGHTER JUST HAD A PICK LINE PLACED. SHE WILL BE ON IV ANTIBIOTICS FOR 2-3 WEEKS BUT WE DO THEM AT HOME. SHE ALSO GETS NERVOUS AND TRIES TO GET OUT OF IT. BUT I REASURE HER THAT I WILL BE WITH HER THE WHOLE TIME. I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR MOM, BUT SHE CAN BE A GREAT HELP. kATE, MY DAUGHTER USES ME LIKE HER NURSE. SINCE THE NURSES ARE SO BUSY SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO BE RIGHT ON TOP OF THEM. NEVER LET YOUR LINE BEEP FOR A LONG TIME. KEEP CALLING THE NURSE. THAT CAN BE ONE OF THE WAYS IT CAN BECOME BLOCKED. WE HAD THAT EXPERIANCE SO THEY TAUGHT ME TO CLAMP IT OFF TILL THE NURSE COULD COME IN. ALSO I STAY WITH kATE AT NIGHT NURSES ARE SHORT HANDED AND I CAN KEEP HER ON TASK WITH MEDS AND OTHER FAMILY CAN VISIT DURING THE DAY. I LIKE BEING A PART OF KATES CARE, I DON'T FEEL SO HELPLESS AND SHE SOME TIMES JUST NEEDS TO VENT ON ME, SOMETIMES NICELY SOMETIMES NOT SO NICE BUT IT ALL WORKS OUT. THEY HAVE GOTTEN VERY GOOD AT THE PICK LINE, YOU SHOULD BE JUST FINE., ASK ALOT OF QUESTIONS AND SPEAKUP IF IT FEELS FUNNY YUO ARE THE PATIENT AND THEY NEED YOU FEEK BACK. GOOD LUCK.<img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">

Message 4 Leah

One of my main anxieties at the moment is if my daughter who is 2 years old has to have ivs. She has PA at the moment. Had it first when she was 10 months old, was then clear, came back exactly 12 months later. Been using neb since last October, keeps going then coming back?

Any advice?

Thanks
