Picc Lines

I am wondering about Picc lines. After two very bad experiences with having ports inserted I have discovered that they are not an option for me. So, since my hospital won't place Picc lines, I am stuck using peripheral canulas. I do iv meds at home maybe once or twice a year so if the line blows I have to go to the ER to get a replacement- not nice. My doc's reasoning is that picc lines are more damaging to the veins.

My question is- do your doctors insert your picc lines in theatre under surgical conditions? Also, do they use uv light or ultrasound to guide them through the vein?

Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!

I can't believe your hospital doesn't do PICCs. This is what they do in my 7 yr old (who is very tough to get an IV or PICC in):

Most of his are put in under mild sedation (propofol) using x-ray by Interventional Radiology.

His last they could not get in and ended up being done under a deeper sedation by a Ped. Cardiologist in his cath. lab.

They did try one time to insert a PICC in-room, using UV light but failed miserably and ended up actually poking an artery on their 3rd AND LAST try.

I've had mine placed bedside (in the crook of my elbow), in radiology, and the last one I had placed was with ultrasound, and (whether it was the nurse or the ultrasound technique) it was the easiest placement I've had so far. I can understand not placing midlines, bc of vein damage, but picc lines? I hope you find a solution soon. Good luck.

I've had several picc lines. Most of them were placed using conscious sedation in Interventional Radiaology - using xray. One or two ultrasounds. Most all the time They use an ultrasound machine before the procedure to look for the vein they want to use. I've had two placed in pediatric ICU by -- I'm just going to call her a Picc line specialist because I don't remember her actual title.

Over time your veins can become damaged from scar tissue and it can become harder to put them in, which is usually when a port is introduced. (To my knowledge).

On a more opinionated note, I think it's ridiculous they are sending you home on IV's without a picc.=( Best of luck to you! hang in there.
