Picking up bugs in hospitals

I have to say that I am nuts about staying out of the hospital. When I was in college, I enjoyed going in for a clean-out. The food was good, I slept great, the gym was down the hall....and I was very healthy, so getting a weeks rest was kind of nice.

In 1995, I picked up a virus while in the hospital for a clean-out and ever since I have been nuts about germ issues. One of my best friends with cf picked up mrsa while in for a clean-out....grrrr. Now, when I need to go in, I try to do at home ivs because I can't stand the thought of picking up a new germ. I mean I have gone waayyy out of the way to avoid hospital admission. I have hired help, cook, food delivery..anything for th doc to see I have a built in support system....not to mention my sweet husband!!!

Is anyone else germ-phobic, so to speak? And have you ever picked up a bug in the hospital? I do all of the precautions, wash hands...all the time, wipe down everything on move in day...still, my only peace comes in my own crib.
thanks-

When ppl at home are sick yes. I hate when ppl are disgusting about it and don't isolate themselves, they just sit on their ass on the couch in the family all day and contaminate everything. THAT makes me angry. So i just stay in my room.

Ironically enough, 2 weeks ago i picked up a bug at the respirologists office. How lovely, eh?

yup. my doc insists that being in the hospital for 2 weeks is good rest for me, cuz i don't have to cook, clean, etc as you mentioned.

next time he wants me to stay in for 2 weeks, i'm going to challenge him to sit in the hospital for 2 weeks and see how insane cross-contamination is. i've had a nurse rinse out my nebs with tap water, another nurse play with my PICC without washing her hands, etc.

plus the isolation patients are allowed to walk around freely, even though people have to gown up to go into their room .HELLO. it drives me nuts.

picking up something is way scarier i think than having to cook at home & maybe change my sheets a few times a week.

yes!! the last time Kj had a tune up, I cleaned all of the surfaces around her with alcohol and we constantly washed our hands with the alcohol hand lotion. On her very last day she had a temperature but was released anyway. We were back up at emergency that night with a very high temp but were sent home. She had caught a virus and had high temps for a week and lost 3kg from cough throwing up. She still hasn't gained that weight back and it has been approx 8 months.

There are only shared showers and toilets and she didn't get her own room. She had to share a room with ppl who were coughing (don't know what they had).

We hope to have home care next time. If doc will allow it.

Amy, what the hell hospital do you go to? I'm an isolation patient, and I am... get this... isolated. lol I'm not allowed to leave my room unless I'm going for an X-ray or something.

As for being a germaphobe, I'm not. Not even in the hospital, though I do like to avoid inpatient stays if possible, for that reason. I'm too lazy to scrub everything down, but if I can IVs at home instead, I will.

You're telling me, Emily....

I go to USC University Hospital. I've complained to my doc and he shrugs and says he can't force patients to stay in their rooms.

I reply, then why the hell are they in isolation? What's the point? Why does anyone have to gown up when going into their room if the patient can walk the hallways by his or herself.

It's insane. It's rediculous. And I feel like calling the idiot police on them.
