Playing outside in the cold.

I am asking this question in the adult forums for a few reasons. One being that the adult cf=ers were children once themselves. And also from other parents point of view.

Austin wants to be outside in the snow all day. He would stay out there literally all day if I wouldn't make him come back inside.

It is currently 19 degrees outside and the wind is blowing making drifts across the roads. He is all bundled up like you see in the commercials. Long johns, socks, long soccer socks, sweats, hooded sweatshirt, snow pants, very heavy winter coat, boots, hat and gloves. He can barely move.

So my question is what do you think about him playing outside all the time in this weather. I haven't noticed any difference in his cough. But I still worry that if he gets sick. I will have all those would have should haves going through my mind. I do limit his outside time.

But he wants to be a normal kid. He is outside digging a tunnel with his cat.

Paula, I would say as long as he is not showing any signs of a cold and he is dressed properly he should be ok. I always played outside in the winter ice skating, sledding etc... Granted I had mild lung issues as a kid but I would still say it should be ok. Maybe you can work it out so that he can play for a set period of time and then come inside for some hot cocoa or something else to warm him up (so it is not a punishment) for say a 1/2 hour or so. Then you could send him out with a new hat and set of gloves that are not all wet from the snow which will also help to keep him warm and dry.

I echo what Kevin said. I played outside in the snow all the time as a kid, for HOURS. I used to love to make snow cones with cups full of snowballs and whatever juice was in the refrigerator! Sometimes it would result in a runny nose, but most of the time it just allowed me to be a normal kid. I say let him go for it.

I agree with everyone else. Let him be a normal kid! He is bundled up, he is not sick, he is taking care of his CF needs when he comes inside. Tell him to jump into a big snow pile for Cory, who would love too if he wasn't stuck in the hospital
