Playing sports with CF

My question is : If your child is participating in a sports activity on the part of the form that says list any medical conditions and list all medications. What do you guys put in there?

I have started wondering what and if I should put anything in there right now because these forms are placed where anyone can see. Like Summer Rec baseball and soccer. I know when my hubby coached the forms were right there for anyone to see and it was a draw. You got to pick which kids you wanted on your team.

And I know from experience that when you write down Cystic Fibrosis that there are sooooo many people who have no clue what that is. I have had some people think that he had Cerebral Palsy instead. So I often wondered if he has been somewhat discrimminated against due to lack of knowledge. Because after they see him play they are amazed and make the comment that he looks normal and acts normal. (when they thought he had Cerebral Palsy or whatever else they thought he had)

And at this point listing all his medications I dont think is necessary cuz he is never left at a practice or game without a parent. I am not one of the parents that just drops off and goes off and leaves him there. At least right now. LOL!

My parents never wrote down any of my drugs, and it wasn't until I was running competitively that they told my coach - which made me very upset me at the time. They didn't even tell the school nurse, because they wanted me to be able to carry my own pancreas capsules to lunch, which the school would probably would have had a problem with.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend the same approach for all other CFers... but, if your kid is mild, and otherwise healthy, and a parent is always going to be there, I don't see why you would want to list them all, or make a big deal of his CF if there was a chance it would affect his playing time, how he was picked for the team, how he was viewed by the coaches (who probably know nothing about CF), etc.

I left it blank on one of the applications I filled out recently. The only reason I've THOUGHT about putting it on an application is if there were any other kids with CF who might be in the same class and wouldn't want them in close proximity to each other. And so far with the classes he is in, we stay and watch.

This actually is pretty important stuff that they should know. What if he got hurt and you weren't there? If they had to take him to the hospital they need to know what meds he takes and his conditions. I would just tell them that this information is private and needs to be protected as such.
