Playing the CF card

I would look into the 504 but not to get him out of class, but to make him & them realize that sometimes accomodations can/need to be made. Its the law now......if nothing else it would help him for his overall education not just getting to play in a basketball game. Good Luck!

I'm in Nevada. Up until now I've never had any problems. I got whatever I wanted without the 504. All the elementary teachers were so great. Jr. High proves so far to be totally different. I met with all the teachers at the beginning and told them what he needed, extra bathroom privleges, extra set of textbooks at home. I got that without the 504, but I've got one teacher that could just care less I needed her to work with us and she wouldn't. What He needed now was to play at least one game with his team. It was important and I wasn't able to get it for him and I'm regreting it already. Some things are just as important as education and this time it was basketball. No one could see it but me I guess. Now that I know what he has to deal with after trying to work with her I feel like getting him out of there, but everyone has to learn to put up with *&@#$ people sometime right. Is 7th grade that time? Maybe I should decide when I'm not so angry.

He should have the 504 regardless. But for the social studies issue is there not another teacher for that subject. I would try to get him transfered out of that teachers class and into some one elses. People tend to close off to people and places that make them uncomfortable. Do you feel he would do better in s.s if he had someone else teaching it. Have you talked to the principle about how sports is so good for his lungs and you want him to keep his grades up , but you and your son feel like he would apply himself more if he felt comfortable with the teacher. That you feel like he isnt getting any incouragement or support from his teacher.

The bottom line is you gotta do what's best for your kid.

I've found things in 7th grade to be much more serious and independent than in elementary school. I still think its worth a shot talking to someone at the school (department head, principal, guidance) and find a way for you son to work with this teacher so he can play ball. What do you mean by "I needed her to work with us and she wouldn't"? If she is really being unprofessional, then you should speak up. Sometimes you just have an unreasonable teacher. Is there another teacher who teaches the same class?

I think it is shameful you would consider using CF as a reason to drop a class your son is failing. I didn't hear anything accept you were mad he couldn't play basketball, shouldn't you be a concerned that your child is failing a class? I think you should support the benching of your child and encourage a little more study time. I guess what I am saying it sounds like he needs to devote more time to studying and less to athletics? Before it is said.. I know exercise is important but he can get that without playing in organized ball. Let's be real folks...there has never been a professional basketball player with CF and there are thousands with college degrees.

I agree with Allie and luke's comment.
A concern regarding Allie's comment, is whether using the 504 may actually hurt his situation regarding his being able to stay in basketball.
And, adding to luke's comment, I have a brother, and sister, who were both involved in the high school athletics, and some of their grades slipped, meaning they had to put more time into studying to keep up with the rest of the class. Which brings to another point, keeping up with other kids in school should be done acedemically, as well as physically. Whether Social Studies are usefull in the future, or not, it is a general subject everyone should be familiar with.
An additional thought is whether the teacher happens to 'have it out for him', or if there are other students in the class that the teacher is just as strict about? Just thought that omitting that idea would help in deciding whether or not to use the 'CF Card'. Personally, I worked twice as hard in studies, and everything for that matter, in order to stay with everyone in school, and did not use any mention of CF along the way. I don't even think anyone knew I had CF, much less what it was, even after I graduated!

Edited: Ok, the only time I used the 'CF Card' was in order to use the 'Faculty Bathroom' in order to avoid ridicule by using the students bathroom, which, by the way, had all the doors removed, (because they all went to the john to smoke, anyway...hey, I avoided that nasty situation, as well!), so I had no privacy during those 'bad stomach days'.

Social studies is pretty important. About the only class a 504 id going to get you kid out of is PE. He needs a different teacher...period. Go to the principal.
