Calling all computer know it alls.

Got my HP Pavillion ZD8000 laptop in Feb 2005. Had NOTHING but problems with it since. Last straw right before christmas, it shuts down adn won't reboot. I'll try to turn it on, it does this urrrrr, urrrr, urrrr, click thing, like it's trying to boot up but it won't. And the power light will stay on while it's doing all this, and the other buttons (that are only on when the computer is on) will flicker on with it, but then kick back over (hope this makes sense). And it wouldn't turn off while it was in this mode. I had to wait for the darn battery to die.

So I sent it back to HP (under extended warranty) and it said they replaced and repaired the hard drive. I got it back 3 days ago, (on Friday). Used it online this weekend a few times WITH a security program as always.

Used it yesterday morning for about 1 hour. Went to go back and use it in the afternoon and the screen was black. Moved the mouse around for a few minutes, still black screen. Turned it off, did the same rebooting problem as before, urrrrr, urrrr, urrrr, urrr, click, urrrr, urr.... you get the idea. After about 10 attempts, it DID finally turn back on, but then it just went back to a black screen again. On and everything with the fans going (you can tell by the sound if it's on or off) but the screen was just black. Twice it flickered, like when you have some interruption in your TV and it goes waco (reminded me of static, but visual instead of auditory) for about 2 seconds about 15 minutes apart, and then black again...

WTF???????????? I called HP, they are sending me a repair box to send it in AGAIN. But this time, I'm thinking about nicely demanding a NEW computer. They have documented "problem" phone calls from me over the past year, a repair done a few days ago.... I think I need and DESERVE a new one. What do you guys think? Those of you who know computers, if they REPLACED the hard drive, why would the same problem be reproduceable???? Just looking for some answers (because HP was useless) and to know if I would be unreasonable in asking for a new one this time aroudn.

and what can I use in the future to back up all my computer stuff, it's a lot. I LOST it all this time, although some things I had saved to disk or other computer, but I lost a lot of the stuff that I had put together for this site. I'm so frustrated!!!

Thanks

I would go for a new, if they replaced the hard drive and it went out again that quick there is some other problem. for backup they have 1gb usb flash drives that aren't too expensive $15-$20. If you don't already have one installed on your computer and adware blocker and scanner is pretty handy, there is a free scanner called ad-aware SE by lavasoft that is really good.

HP is from what I recall usually unreliable in the computer help department. My boyfriend is a computer geek (built his own computer, maintains his own website, going to school for software development, is the college tech group etc, runs linux) I'll have him look over this post and get back to you today.

Additionally I've found ad-aware to be not so good compared to the programs that I usually run (it only picks up miscellaneous stuff and cookies, I find more running spybot and a-squared both free)

I had the same exact problems with my laptop & HP was worthless. I am currently in the process of sending it in for a new board. I guess I am too hard on mine. The keys are popping left/right & they say its under the warranty which I had to extend for them to even talk to me about my hard drive problem. If I ever get another computer especially a laptop it wont be thru HP. Not to mention I call & reach India who have less knowledge then me at this point. Sorry didnt mean to vent. Cant help you at the moment....good luck!

Thanks for the info everyone, Candice I'll wait to hear from you if your BF has any insight.

I might have mislead about a "new computer" so to speak. We can't afford to buy one right now, but I wanted to know if it would be rediculious to ask HP to REPLACE our current one, instead of trying to fix it again???? Believe me, If and when I can afford a new laptop, we will NOT be going with HP!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I would have them replace this one, when my husband and I bought our hp computer about a year ago, not long after having it the monitor was messing up cant remember now what it was doing so we took it back to Best Buy and they sent it back to the hp place to have them work on it, well it came back hubby picked it up brought it home and the color was messed up,so we thought that they couldnt fix ours so they gave us one that had the color wacked so hubbyand I couldnt stand the color messing up so, oh and by the way a few keys started to not work right either on the keyboard so he took the keyboard and monitor back and just asked if he could replace them with a new monitor and keyboard, they didnt have any more keyboards so we got the one that was on display we didnt mind and we did get a brand new monitor and ever since then its worked like a charm. I would diffanatly ask them to replace it with a new one and on saving your stuff on your computer so you dont lose it, I would just suggest to keep saving stuff onto a disc every month or so that way if the computer does crash you have back up on disks. Hope you get it fixed.
