Well, I guess Chris' idea with the 1Gb USB is out of the question...at least with my idea, you can get CD-RW in bulk, but who needs it if you got an 80GB or more HDD, like Allie suggested!

However, I would still recommend that the MOST important files are backed up on disk, in case the HDD of any type ends up failing!

Happy Computering!!

My boyfriend is an IT-head also and said pretty much the same things as Gordon...

He also asked if your extended warranty is actually with HP or a third party company, and if it's HP, you have a better chance of getting what you want by being persistent, talking to a manager, etc.

And if that fails, try writing in to one of the known computer magazines! Most of them have sections for disgruntled customers and once the problem is in print, the companies often relent...

Good luck!

Once HP merged with Compaq - I stopped trusting them. Since everyone has given you good advice (aka pester pester pester - and hope they shut you up with a new machine), here's what I would recommend for the future.

External Hard-Drives: Western Digital. (Best Buy online currently has a sale + free shipping on a 160 GB drive for $80.)

Next laptop: Sony. I have a Sony desktop which has been extremely reliable. My father has a laptop and a desktop - both excellent.

I have a HP ZD8000 also. I never had any problems with it (besides the weight of the thing and how much heat it puts out). I noticed that if I use the computer for awhile and put it in the backpack that came with it, that the laptop overheats very quick. I need to let it cool down for half an hour or so before I can pack it up and take it anywhere. The one time I didn't, I had serious sound issues and the computer slowed down to a crawl. This lasted for a few days till it went away. (desktop replacements...anyway)

Well anyway, HP customer service...well it stinks. It really does. I hate the outsourcing. As a standard thing they do, they always assume that YOU made some mistake that is messing up your computer. So they get your laptop when you send it in they erase your hard drive and reinstall windows and send you your laptop back. Well when you get it back and the problem is not solved, obviously you have to send it back and then they are forced to look into the problem.

An example: The place that the power cord plugs into was not working well. I could wiggle the cord and it would go to battery and back to power depending on the cord position. The computer was and is still under warranty. So I explain the problem to them. They tell me to reinstall windows... I explain that windows is working fine and that it is a hardware problem not software. They tell me to reinstall windows... after 5 times explaining this I finally have to backup my hard drive and send it off to them. They reinstall windows. I get it. problem still there. I tell them again to fix it. They say reinstall windows... I finally get someone who is not outsourced and understands what I am saying. I send it in and it gets fixed. This only took like month or so to take care of. Point of the story is that I really wanted to rant about that. lol. Theres other points to the story but that one works too.

My advice is to stick it out till they fix it. I love my laptop. It outshines my desktop and I use it all the time. Hope this works out for you.

Rant all you want Join me in my stupid computer misery, LOL. I HATE the darn thing. TOTALLY impractical for a laptop. I can't take it anywhere because the battery life is an hour or so, sometimes 2 if I'm lucky. And that thing heats up so fast, 3 HUGE fans... YIKES.

I'll send it in again, but if this happens again, I'm calling the news "problem solvers" in my area and writing to the computer magazines like emma suggested. I don't mind doing that!

Thanks for the info Miesl, I've heard sony, so if we ever do get a new one, that might be it. But for now, I'm stuck with this stupid thing!
