Hello All-
I'm not trying to be stupid here...but my doctors have never used the term "plug" with me. Are these something different than regular secretions? I've seen some write that they can cause pain. Could somebody please help me understand?

O what varied answers you will recieve about color and texture on this! lol

Basically it's a more solid chunk of mucus that has been blocking an airway. You know when you cough them out because of thier texture. Thier size can vary from looking like large ground pepper to a large pea.

If anyone has coughed up larger than a pea size, I bow to you now. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Just dealing with this right now. They remind me of balls of rubber cement. I find them kinda painful. I spent the night in the ER a few weeks ago with my first experience with mucus plugs (on the tail end of a tune up). I have a little lung pain and then about 12-24 hours later I cough plugs up (percussion treatment helps).

The plugs I had really affected my PFT's for a short time... started cough them up and numbers got better (clearer airways).
