For those of you who have had pneumonia....

1. How long were you out of work?

2. What symptoms did you have (if any) as you were getting better?
(I've been really exhausted and just sick to my stomach)

My husband figured it would be good for me to ask the list and get info from other CFer's that may have had it...

Pneumonia knocks me down for weeks, months sometimes. depending on how severe it was. I felt much like you do right now, like a wet dish rag...no energy, just blah and no appetite. I would be on IV's for quite some time usually...the last time I actually had pneumonia was in Sept, I was on IV's almost a month and just felt horrible. Night sweats too. I knew I was getting better when I was beginning to crave my favorite foods, also I felt like doing things. As I said, it really saps my energy, so lots of physical therapy is prescribed once I get home from the hospital to build up my strength. I hope that you feel better soon...I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers, Hugs Jenn <img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">

I am just like CepaciaGal. I think its just as bad on the rest of my body as the actual lungs. I dehydrate & run fevers, no appetite. Everything goes haywire! In 2000 when I had to stop working is my worst pneumonia & it took me years to get my whole body in synch.

Granted I lost massive amounts of weight & was the most dehyrated I had ever been, but still it all stemmed from the pneumonia!

I get short of breath, cough up more bad green stuff (and brighter green), have a harder time coughing anything up, and the wet dish rag analogy is a really good one- just blah, dragging through the day. I also may wake up coughing in the middle of the night when I have pnemonia.

All these things start to subside as the antibiotics start to work, and I have more energy. I can be on antibiotics for anywhere from 10 days to 21 days, depending on how well they work and how sick I am when I start. Usually, after about the first week, though, if I am on the right antibiotics, I am a lot better.

I stay at home, though, so I can't answer your "off work" question, but I know that there are a few who take their antibiotics to work (I couldn't do that- I have to rest- they take too much out of me). I do have someone come during the day to watch my daughter while I do my antibiotics so I can concentrate on just doing them. They also take her home (especially in the beginning) so I can nap during the day, and my husband becomes "Mr. Mom" in the evenings so I can go to be early after my meds and not have to worry about anything else.

I hope that helps at least a little, and I hope you are feeling better really soon!
