If he won't let you irrigate, see if he will at least use q-tips to wipe out the nostrils. I frequently pour diet tonic water (which contains quinine) over q-tips and treat that area. It isn't as thorough as irrigating the sinuses but it's better than nothing.
Carmex: It's a lip balm. It's very popular with people in the Army. My ex was career army and I learned about it through him. It doesn't just protect the lips from wind and sun, it heals them after they have been damaged. It's good stuff. I began putting it in my sinuses at least twice a day a few years ago. It has gone a long way towards helping them heal, stopping the frequent nose bleeds I use to have, etc. When my sinuses are too dry, it helps supplement the missing mucus so they are protected the way are supposed to be and so incoming crud (like pollen) gets caught and trapped like it is supposed to be. That helps protect the deeper sinuses and the throat and lungs.
