port being placed tomorrow

Pain medication has always made me nauseus, and possibly the anesthesia. I can feel the soreness now that everything has wore off, but I'd rather have a little pain than nausea, and the pain is not that bad. Mostly when I turn or stretch or cough. Thanks for the prayers.

This thread could not have been timelier for me (thanks for posting Jeana!). I'm currently in the hospital on Day #2 of IV meds & my gazillionth PICC. My left arm is not an option any more & as for my right arm, radiologist said we were lucky to get access this time (as he's bumping up against the medial nerve!!). Seems like I've run out of options & need to get a port. My MD suggested I have it placed toward the end of my in-patient stay. I know it makes the most sense, even if I'm only on IVs 1-2x/year, but I'm really having a hard time coming to terms with this decision. First, it's totally vanity, but I'm so scrawny (5'4", 110 lbs) that I'm going to find it difficult to deal with the fact that it's going to stick out like a sore thumb. And second, I'm a complete wuss & am dreading having to access it every month and/or weekly while on IVs (I don't know if I'd have the patience for EMLA cream...).

So...a few questions for those of you that have a port: 1) what convinced you to get one 2) does it really not hurt to access it?? 3) how long is the recovery time after it's placed (I have to travel/fly for work on 17Jan then return home on 20Jan...am I crazy??) 4) for the ladies, how has it affected your wardrobe choices, or has it?? 5) did you get a choice of what brand/size/location to use?

A big THANK YOU to Lauren & Christina for sharing their pictures; I really found it helpful. If I end up getting mine, I will post pics, too. Best of luck to you, Jeana & please let us know how it goes for you during the next few weeks.

Hi Rebecca,
First of all, I think you will be fine to work 3 days after you get the port, as long as your job isn't tremendously physical. My port still hurts, but only to the point of needing tylenol. And the worst pain is during/right after hypertonic from coughing. If I were not in the hospital and being "forced" to do hypertonic saline, I would have probably skipped it for a few days while my port healed. As far as getting accessed, I knownothing yet, since I haven't had to do that yet.
I did not get a choice in ports. They just used one that the hospital has found most successful. It is an Xcela Power Injectable Port. Apparently, CF patients here have had this one last 10+ years. This port is about half the height of some of the ports, so I am hoping that doesn't cause clogging issues. I think someone wrote that power ports can clog more easily. But since I didn't get a choice, I'm not going to worry about it. I can't tell for sure how far the port sticks out, but from what I could see when the dressing was changed, it just seems to look live a slight swelling, not a big bump. I don't think anyone will even notice it. Plus, they said that they couldbasically place it wherever I wanted it. Mine is about at the top of my right breast. They were going to do the left side but the veins on the right looked better apparently.
I will update in a few more days when they reaccess and change the dressing again.

Rebecca,

1) I was convinced to get a port because I had TONS of problems with PICCs. I had a PICC back in April that clotted and I had to be on blood thinners, right before my wedding. Then I needed another PICC in August and it stopped working. I was told that it had moved inside and possibly creased somehow. I kind of believe that it was never placed right to begin with...After spending the day/night in the ER because of the issue, I had a clinic visit and mentioned it to my doctor and he was all for it. I had mentioned it to him a while back and he wasn't all for it then...so the fact that he was happy with me mentioning made me feel better.

2) I got mine placed in the end of September. The first time they accessed it (home health care does it for me...don't know if I will EVER want to do it myself), in the end of October it hurt a teeny bit. But since then, I've had it done twice and it has not hurt AT ALL. I barely even know she is in. It's wonderful! I don't recommend Emla, probably takes too long and I haven't felt it necessary for me.

3) Recovery time was really fast for me. I took from Friday (the day the port was placed) until Wednesday off from work, but I probably could have gone back Monday, maybe Tuesday. I was not all that sore...motrin was fine for pain. I was just still very exhausted from the versed and fentanyl they gave to semi knock me out. And also since it was slightly still warm in September, I had a large dressing on my chest for about a week. And it kind of stuck out like a sore thumb...In January you can easily cover that up.

4) Like I said before, in the beginning it kind of affected what I wore, but now it doesn't matter. Granted I have not had the port in the summer months. I can't tell you what kind of bathing suit I will want to wear when that time comes. I still have a very pink scar, but the good part about the placement of mine...the small bump (the actual port) is practically under my bra strap, so I personally think it's less noticable.

5) I did not get a choice as to where. Unfortunately for me (I am a righty) the clot I had back in April was in my left shoulder/clavicle area, so they did not want to put the port on that side. So even if I wanted to access myself, my port is on my right side so I don't think I would be coordinated enough to do that. It is what it is! At least the nurses like me and don't mind seeing me once a month! hahaha. As far as brand, no I did not have a choice on that either. I have a power port. With that, there should be three prongs, so to speak that you feel under the skin and you access in the middle of those. With mine, I can only feel two...which may cause access issues but so far nothing.

Good luck! And btw, my doctor also mentioned to get mine when I am feeling good. So at the end of a cleanout is probably the best time for you. You won't have to worry too much about coughing and stuff. And unless you need it for IV's right away (which you don't since they were able to get a PICC), recovery will be easier.

Hi Rebecca,
Like you, Picc lines were getting harder to place. I had had probs w/ 2 of my ports (thats why i went back to a picc line) due to DVT (blood clot) But when I got a blood clot due to the last picc that was placed we decided to go w/ a port again & I am on blood thinners for the clotting prob.
I love my port.. I dont think it was too painful after the placement. Maybe a little sore. As far as it hurting when accessing , sometimes I use the emla , but most of the time I forget & just tuff it out lol .. Im gonna be honest & say sometimes it hurts a bit more than other times.. I think you end up w/ somewhat of a callus so then it is not as painful to access.
Clothing choices, I guess it effects my choices a bit. But for the most part, I wear what I want even if it shows ! At my age I dont think I give a crap anymore lol but I can understand why someone would be & you can make choices that make you comfortable..
I have a Medi port (double) It is pretty small. I love it !! I hope you have a good placement & love yours too ! Let us know how it went.
Take care joni

Hi
Ladies thankyou so much for posting your port pix....Since I am very bony below collar bone, it would really show, I like where laurens is...
I am still using picc lines very successfully and this is my 2nd picc Ive had in over a year...(Since Mid Nov 2010) .....since it doesnt bother me in arm, I wonder if port in arm would be ok for me......
with picc in arm and its summer and I want to go sleeveless, I put on a very lightweight tennis elbow brace....no one says a thing....
I am also worried about coughing with the port, but once its healed I guess there is no problems or pain coughing with a port.....
Another young lady had sent me pix of her port and couldnt see it at all!...so thanks to everyone Im not as apprehensive as I was before about a port, well except for the accessing!

Well Do hospitals have different ports you can pick from, or I would presume that each hospital has a port they prefer and thats the one you get?
