port being placed tomorrow

I am a port lover myself, I am on my second...my first got infected so they had to remove it. If it happened again, I would still get another port over a PICC any day.
Recovery was very quick, some soreness maybe a little bruising but that's all. Mine is located in my left upper chest. I access mine on my own monthly and when I need IV's. That's what I love....no PICC teams and NO waiting for them to be placed so that IV's can be started. If you want to learn how to do this yourself, it isn't difficult and offers that much more freedom for you. The technique isn't hard....Here is my blog (which sadly hasn't been updated in forever) which has videos of my port, particularly me accessing it. http://livingjennslife.blogspot.com/
Coughing was somewhat sore for awhile....the vest, I put a folded towel over it to cushion it a little more.

I think that's it for now...good luck, you won't regret it!

FYI...I was working with a customer in my store who had a prt in her arm and it was VERY noticable. I could see the bump/tubing you name it. I have to say I am very bony as well and my port is very hidden...I will try to post pics soon, but it is similar to Laurens. From a profile view, you cant see a thing.

Thank you so much, everyone for your detailed & thorough replies - this is great information! Like many of you, from the brief conversation I had with the radiologist when I was getting my PICC placed, I think my hospital (University of Wisconsin) only uses a couple of brands/types. He did mention something about a "slim port" & possibly having it placed in my arm. But, from the sounds of it (thanks Caitlin!) it may be more noticeable there. I'm thinking just above my left breast sounds like it would hide it best, though I'm not sure how hidden it would really be since I don't have much "padding" there! LOL!!

Watto: I'm sorry to hear that your wife had such troubles with her port placement. Lung puncture is a rare unfortunate risk of the procedure. I'm glad she is feeling better now. Maybe you have done this already, but is there a way you could call one of the CF docs in the US (sounds like you used to live in the US??) or maybe the CF Foundation & get a recommendation for a pulmonologist in Mexico??

Jenn: thanks for the link to your blog; the video of you accessing your port was definitely helpful.

I've been YouTubing & Googling to find as much as I can about ports (pictures, types, sizes, accessing, etc.). I won't forget to post pics & who knows, maybe if I'm feeling brave I'll post a video! There's really a lot less info out there than I thought. So keep the information coming!! Thank you thank you thank you!!
