Port Q?

I have a Power-Port in my chest. I have been going in and out of the ER this weekend due to a bad cough and fare-up. I have a nurse that comes to my house once a month to set up my port and then take it out. My ? is I am going back in to clinic on Monday. and if this cough is making me sicker over Sunday I may go back to ER. I would like to put my port needle in just so it is in so clinic can use it. If I do that watch the home nurse said I could do if I want to. I have all the things I need to do it. but can I just have the needle in it with out having to flash it all the time?

That's all just need to know.

I think once you access it, you should flush with saline and then heparin. Once you flush with heparin, you can clamp it and you should be good to go. You only have to flush it again if you use it for IV meds, etc. (or once a month, per protocol). This is my understanding, but I could be wrong. Can you call your doc or nurse just to clarify?
