Ports and intimacy

Hello all,
I'm 22, and I am on my ohh..about 30th PICC. I like PICCs, but I know eventually I am going to need a port. I know that a lot of women get them right above their breasts, and I was wondering if that interferes with sex much.

hi mary,
i'm on my second port, and b/c i'm a c cup, and there is a lot of breast tissue surrounding my port, you can't even see it (it doesn't stick out at all). the only way you'd know anything was there is from the scar. I can't speak from personal experience on the sex issue, but i can't imagine it would get in the way. you might want to be a bit more careful when it is accessed, but when it isn't accessed i can't think of any potential problems. oh, and mine is right above my left breast.

I have mine under my right breast and slightly to the side....not completly on the side because i stll sleep on my side. But its over jsut enough its not centered. It is well hidden. Also I am small busted but because of the breast shirts come over it enough to hide it...unless of course its a tight shirt...but even then no one notices it...Mine is big for my size and is bigger than what they normally place...long story. It doesnt interfer with intimacy at all. It does interfer with intimacy and hugs when it is accessed but thats reasonable when you have a needle sticking out of anything. But other than another body pressing against yours its not bothersom accessed...Not accessed its not bothersom at all..

I have heard of a handfull of people that say they dont like a port period (actually only one person) and one other that says hers gets in the way of intimacy.

That's a good point... when the port is accessed, it causes a little more trouble. You don't really want someone bumping into it when there's a needle in you. Heh. But even then, I find ways around it, and I still have an active sex life, so to speak. Heh.

I had a port when I needed it long ago, and it was up near my collar bone area... hard to exactly explain I guess. The only problem I had with mine was that the surgeon who put it in should have used a child size, but since I was like 27 or so, he must have thought that I needed an adult size.... so since I was think it stuck out a little, but it wasn't bad. And I never had a problem with intimacy or sex. Of course then it was accessed all I did was wear a tank top or something. And I always had the needle taped very securly... We've always had a very healthy sex life <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> I had my port removed about 5 years ago... of course since my transplant 7 years ago I never needed it.

But... when the needle is in place I have had sex and its come out of place before!!! just the needle, no damage to the actual port. So any sex your having when on i.v's make sure its in a position where he isn't leaning on you! i've had to make up some stories to get me out of the embarrassing situation when I have to go back to my hospital to have a new needle put in and explain how it came out!! I'm sure they guess by the bright red face!!!

Mine is below my right breast and gets in the way a lot... but i am very underweight. It really gets in the way when i am doing home IV, because it sticks out a bit more. I used to have it above my breast in my shoulder and it was perfectly fine.
