Thanks for the advice everyone! I hope to be able to wait another 2 yrs, because I don't want to have a port when I am in my wedding dress!

Whatever works for you, Mary. But if you get the port placed in a specific spot, it could be hidden. I understand not wanting to have a port in your collarbone for wedding photos, I would feel the same way. However, mine is underneath my left breast, and is not visible at all unless I'm in my underwear, or a bathing suit. It doesn't really stick out enough to poke through my clothes. Just food for thought. <img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">

I was on the swim team when I had my port put in, so it was important to me to put it somewhere that wouldn't be seen in a swimsuit. That one was below my left breast, but I had trouble when I lay on my stomach with it rubbing my ribs and with my bras irritating it, perhaps it was placed too high. This second one (had it for 7 years) is placed on my right side, even with my nipple, just forward enough to be in quite a bit of breast tissue. I am small busted. I used to be a good B, but am now an A. I have no problems with it. With certain types of needles I can still sleep on my right side even when it's accessed!. It doesn't get bothered by my arm. I am self-concious when it is accessed about it showing when my husband and I are intimate, so I usually wear a tank or sport bra and tuck up the tubing. He has told me that it doesn't bother him. It's me that it bothers, but just psychologically, not physically. It's also a great place (didn't think of it when it was placed cause I wan't even dating hubby) because it's out of the way for taking care of daughter. When she was nursing - oh wait, she still is, hahaha - but, I mean lots, it was nice cause even when it was accessed, it was out of the way for her and neither of us were ever bothered by it.

A port is a little plastic top-hat looking thing. The top is thick rubber in the center so that needles can pierce it and the bottom is sealed. There is a little tube that comes out one side. Dr.s insert the port under your skin and attatch it to muscle and then run the tube up to your sub-clavian artery (or vein - I don't remember) which is a big one that goes directly into your heart and runs under your collarbone. Then when you need an IV, instead of sticking your arms and hands or trying to thread a PIC line, they take this funnty-looking needle made just for ports and stick it through the skin into the port. It feels like any other prick, but then they don't have to dig around and you know the IV will last. It's kind of like having an electrical uotlet and just plugging in.Hope that helps a little. It's hard to explain without being ablt to show you.
