Ports problems

Cory has a port several years ago and I never had any problems accessing his port. Most often, on the first attempt.
He now has a new port (only been accessed 1 other time). We went to change the needle today and when we went to reaccess we were having horrible success. First we would get no blood return but then we would get blood return (it was slow and I noticed that there way air in the return, almost frothy looking). It would not flush. Several attempts later, same results, slow blood return but would not flush.
I have never used home health to access because I have never had a problem before. Cory doesn't really like home health nurses<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Anyone have problems like this when access their port?

*I* get this problem all the time. DH laughs at me because he does NOT. Its just ME.

So, I finally figured out what was going on. I'm left-handed. Evidentally, the surgeon who put Ch's port in is also very right handed. The port is angled more for a right-handed user. If I face Ch directly and hit the port, I get slow blood return and cannot, not flush, lots of air and frothy. If I twist him more to the left and come at the access more in line with what a right-handed person would do *and* I make sure to pull back slightly when I hit the back of the port--VIOLA perfect access everytime.

Now, getting a 7 yo to remember to turn when Mom is accessing versus Dad is almost as hard as getting that 7 yo to remember to pee BEFORE we access his port. But, at least now that I know what is going on, I know when I've messed up and don't end up needing to get a new needle, because I'll just pull out of the port and keep the needle under the skin, change the angle and do it again.

Play with your angle. Its supposed to be just a basic bulls-eye. But, you're actually the first person other than me I've ever heard of having this problem. And, for me, after months of problems, it all made sense when I figured out it was all my angle.

My port is kind of crazy. It's easy to hit when accessing. It will give blood at the beginning of my IV's but 3 or 4 weeks later when I'm done with them....it won't give a drop of blood! I'm not sure why it does that so then I'm stuck with several pokes in the arm for blood draws.
