Ports problems

My port did this a few weeks ago. I was in the hospital, getting medicine. My flushes had been slow and sluggish but blood return was fine. All of a sudden they pulled back a blood return, went to flush it and couldnt. They took some heprin and did a pumping motion. It didnt help. So they went and got someone to try some clot buster called TPN. They were able to get a little bit in there, but not enough. They got a little back out with a frothy blood tint to it. However, they couldnt get it to flush. After trying all of this over a twelve hour period, it was decided by my doctor that my port had stopped working. They think there might be a fibrois clot or a kink in the line. It really gave no warning. I had it for 3 yrs, they like to get at least 5 yrs out of them. I had mine flushed & hep-locked every month, and hep-locked after each IV dose. You may want to contact the doctor and let them know what it going on. They may ask you to come in for the TPN or might recommend a new port. I will be getting a new port on Aug 18. Good luck.

Josh has had this problem with PICCS. They used TPA, which worked great!

Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is a thrombolytic agent (clot-busting drug). It's approved for use in certain patients having a heart attack or stroke. The drug can dissolve blood clots, which cause most heart attacks and strokes. .

Thanks for clearing that up Jane. It was TPA. I knew it was T-P-something. It is TPA, not TPN. Unfortunately, it was given to me too late. They should have used it when my port started acting more sluggish than when I was admitted. Since they waited, they were not able to get enough in the line to get to the clot. So, it didnt work for me.

It could be a kink or a clot or the needle just angled wrong. My biggest suggestion is dont push it. If you cant flush dont try. Go to the er or call a home health care nurse. If it is a clot and you push with force and flush it thru it and it is big enough it will go straight to the heart like mine did and you could code. The best thing is to let a professional deal with it.
