It could be a kink or a clot or the needle just angled wrong. My biggest suggestion is dont push it. If you cant flush dont try. Go to the er or call a home health care nurse. If it is a clot and you push with force and flush it thru it and it is big enough it will go straight to the heart like mine did and you could code. The best thing is to let a professional deal with it.

I have also run into this. My port is in the right side of my chest-going up to my jugular. My husband has (in the past) accessed and tried for blood return, but to no avail! My home health nurse mentioned that sometimes the muscles around that vein may be tight and actually cause a kink. She had me massage those muscles and turn my head to the right side to see if it made a difference-it did and we were able to get a draw back. Just my experience.
