Ports vs. PICC lines

i got my port about 5 months ago and have used it twice now for IVs and LOVE IT. its so much better than a PICC especially if the need for IVs is becoming more frequent. the last PICC i had took 2 hours to place and was a total nightmare and the vascular radiology people that put it in told me they wouldn't even try to put another picc in either of my arms so i got a port. Mine is located about 2 inches below my collar bone and is a bump under the skin but its covered by all my clothes unless i'm wearing a strapless dress or shirt. I know there are people here that have them placed below the breast at the bottom of their ribs or i think i remember some people having them in their arms and maybe legs? so there are different options about where you can put them. but yeah, like emily said its so much more convenient!

My son is 14 and got his port 5 years ago. We both love it and can't imagine not having one. You do have to flush them once a month but in his case he gets stuck fewer times with the port than when they would have to do an IV or Picc. He has horrible veins and the whole IV and Picc thing were always dramatic for us. Even the Piccs were a huge ordeal and struggle and would require at least 3 tries and usually 4 before they could get it in right. We have not had any issues with the port and he thinks it is one of his best friends. He is looking forward to when the port needs to be replaced because he would like it in his arm so that he can access it himself and not reley on me to do it for him. He is very picky with his port and won't let anyone mess with it except me. I think it is because of all the traumas he went through with the regular IV's and Picc lines.
Knowing what I know now, I would never fight getting a port and if he did not have one, would be asking for one. For us, Ports are a very good thing.
By the way, if you are very particular about who accesses the port and are anal about it when in the hospital, I would think that this would be enough to avoid any problems or infections with it. At least in our case it has, Nathan simply refuses to let anyone access his port except for me and one nurse that we have known for 14 years, nobody else and that has worked great for him.

I got a port placed in January of this year. I am the one who does not love the port.... but I didn't like the PICC either...

The thing I liked about the PICC is once it was done, it was out of my body and I had nothing left to remind me of anything...

THe port is much much easier.. I have used it for a good part of the time since January.. Not having to schedule a time to get the PICC placed is wonderful.

I can access the port myself and start myself right up... so all that is good.

I have the power port placed in my right shoulder... It sticks out, you can see the tubing that goes up to my jugular.. etc.. and I am overweight so it isnt' because I am to thin. I can't sleep on my right shoulder and when I roll over to my belly I can't sleep on it for to long because it hurts my port area.

SO while I agree the Port is so much easier then the PICC line... it isn't a wonderful solution for me.. but it is better then the picc
