Ports vs. PICC lines

Hello!

I've had a port for about 5 months, and I love mine!! Whenever I'd get PICCs they'd never last because I'd clot. I had to go and get the PICCs specially placed in IR (Intervention Radiology)when they use x-rays just because they could never get a good vein for the PICCs any other way.
Then I got a blood clot out of the blue, and that is when they saw that my veins had collaterolled (sp?) and that's why they were having so much trouble with the PICCs. So, my port came a bit of a surprise.
My lung did collapse during the surgery, so I had to get a chest tube, so although it wasn't the most pleasent recovery, once I healed I absoulutely LOVE my port.

I would defintely reccomend it! =)

Good Luck!

ps. It's a slight bummer to be accessed for a heprine flush every month, but in the scheme of things, that's not bad at all. And, it's a relief knowing that when they stick me, for bloodwork or IVs that they'll get something without numerous pokes. (They used to have to go into my thumb and wrist for blood, now, it's just one little poke, and they've gotten blood no problem! yay!)

Shannon, this is a question I have asked a couple of people myself. My daughter is currently in the hospital and has her 2nd PICC line this year. Her doc has mentioned a port, but I am kind of scared of the idea. I think, mainly because it would make all of this a little too real.
I think it would make things alot easier but I am still unsure of the mechanics of the whole "port" thing.

Good luck with your decision.
