Ports

I am considering getting a port. I think I would be more willing to do my IV treatments (and not put them off) if I had one.

From those who have a port, where is yours located and is it ever in the way of normal life? How long has your's lasted? Anything I should consider before getting one?

Being a very skinny woman I am hesitant to get one placed in the "usual" place on the chest because I think it would be very obvious and in the way of bras and seat belts (am I wrong?).

my daughter's is just below her collar bone on her left side and she has had it a year and it is still working great.
Hers does not seem to get in the way (granted she is only 4) but she doesn't complain with her carseat or even when she was on rides at Disney.

I love this topic. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I have mine in a weird place - my upper thigh. I like this location because it is not very visible, even when accessed. It is also extremely easy for me to access my port myself, and change the dressing, etc. This is my 3rd port in this location, each port has lasted me about 1.5 years. Don't get too scared by that number though, I think that is more a reflection of my clotting than the location itself. I have known some people with ports here that lasted many years.

I don't love the location but I don't hate it. I wasn't aware I had a choice when it was placed, and the doctors thought since I was an 18 year old girl I'd want to hide it. Personally I don't care, but since you're looking to not make it as obvious, this might be a good placement for you. If I get another one, chances are, it'll be on my collarbone instead just because my boob won't be in the way. I access my port myself, and because of this placement, I have to squish my boob down and to the left so I can see the port under it. Haha.

I've had this one for 6 years now, and it's still going strong.

It doesn't get in the way of anything, though. Bras were a pain while the incision was healing, but that's all. After it healed, it was no problem. And while it was healing, I just wore sports bras all the time. Occasionally I notice it when sleeping on my stomach, but after a very small adjustment, it's fine, and I can still sleep on my stomach. Unless I'm accessed. If I'm using it (i.e. on IVs), I cannot lay on my stomach. Too annoying, but that's the only time. I also never lost any sensation in the boob area. But I suppose that might be a possibility? Good idea to ask, at least.

I should warn though, that the healing process sucked. Obviously any healing will, but I have a feeling that a placement like this hurts more because it's right on top of your ribs. So every time you cough while you're healing, it's like it's tearing open.

But having said that, I'd get another one in a split second, even if I had no choice and had to put it where my current one is. No hesitation for me, I love mine.
