Positive sweat test of 78

First, I think you know the answer, but a test of 78 could be used to diagnose CF. The advent of genetic testing has taken over as the conclusive answer, but for years sweat tests were the rule. I would probably being looking at this from the standpoint of a positive diagnosis.

As for retest, most likely it is a pre-cursor to getting a genetic test. A borderline result is just that, a positive result it not likely going to come down. But a CF center will likely repeat the test and then send a blood sample for genetic confirmation.

It is not uncommon to have little or no symptoms, especially at your daughter's age. The benefit of knowing now is that most of the advancements in CF are proactive in that you can prevent or greatly delay problems. Once they develop the options drop; so knowing sooner can greatly improve outcome over time.

It's my understanding that breast milk has natural enzymes and is easier to digest, so a lot of times issues don't show up until there's a switch to regular milk or formula.

Ditto on the high sweat test results. I've never ever heard of a false positive only false negatives, like DS had --- a normal 32.

I'd push for more extensive testing. Unfortunately, it sounds as if she's got a number of cf-like symptoms.

Bottomline answer - get a genetic test. Make sure she's tested for all known 1500 mutations of CF.

I hate these sweat tests - puts families like yours through hell unnecessarily. Genetic tests are the way to go....

That you for being straight with me. I knew in my gut but felt like I was over reacting to say outloud to myself that this is real.
