Pre-Diabetes and CF

Hi,

My Primary Physician today informed me today that he feels I am in a "Pre-Diabetes" stage right now, and probably CF related. My recent lab results were a 113 fasting Glucose. I am not sure if this is high or just borderline. We are repeating my labs in two months, so I was told to cut down on simple sugars and eat a "Mediterranean" type diet, lowfat etc. I have always been told to stick to the high-protein, high-calorie, CF diet, so throwing in the Diabetes I am having to address my diet more closely now. I know I should be exercising more, I usually just hit the weights hard 3-4 days a week because that is what I like, with very little cardio. Does anyone have any advice on how to avoid a Diabetes diagnosis and any diet suggestions?

Hi Craig...113, I believe is a bit over what they like for fasting. My hospital is something like 100. It is good that your doc is keeping an eye on you...was this your primary doc or CF doc that gave you advice about your diet? Another question, are you pancreatic sufficient or insufficient? The reason I ask is because alot of diebetic diets don't have the calories that pancreatic insufficient people need to keep the pounds on. (OKay, I just read that you have always been told to be on a high protien diet high calorie diet) I am diabetic at this point, but the docs give me a regular diet with supplements while in hospitals, even though I have sugar issues. They just cover me with extra insulin if I need it to compensate for the calories and carbs, etc....Preventing diabetes, now that's a good question. In the general population, docs tell the patient to eat sensibly, lose weight and exersize, they are typically Type II diabetics and some actually come off of their meds if they do lose the weight, eat right etc.... CF is odd...diabetes in CF has characteristics of Type I and Type II diabetes. Not sure if you can prevent it , I definitely will look that one up as this is fairly new to me too(please, no one yell at me, I am just not sure, so if anyone has info let me know, I am curious too).
It is great that you exercise, keeps you in wonderful shape and your lungs are happy for it too.
Good luck...maybe in the future, the doc will do a glucose tolerance test (they make you drink this awfully sweet concoction, take your blood every 30 to see what your serum glucose is, from all of that your doc can tell you more)
Hugs, Jenn

I am not so sure of that...whether you can prevent it or not. I have always been borderline like you Craig, and recently have noticed that my hemoglobin A1C (which is the test over three months or something like that) has been getting higher. Did they mention that to you? I guess what they do for that test is they test the red blood cells (because they live in our systems for 3 months) and they are able to come up with an average of your sugar levels for the past three months. I believe that in some cases it can be held off, but then again, I know that the diabetes thing is not inevitable. Meaning not everyone will definitely get it. They say whole grains are very good to control the diabetes. I would ask your CF doc office if they have any tips for you. There are books and stuff out there that could help. My nurse at my clinic would be a good resource, so maybe yours too.

I'm wondering though...have you noticed any symptoms? I have been trying very hard to not let my sugars go up too high like you, but im not sure that its helping.

Jenn,

Thanks for your input. It's really cool to chat with a fellow CFer. I'm new to this site and haven't met anyone with CF, so this is great. It is my Primary Physician who addressed the prospect of Diabetetes today, and gave me the lowfat, exercise and lower the simple sugars spiel. I reminded him that as a CFer, I am told to eat the high calorie, high protein diet and not as much worry about lowfat. I am pancreatic insufficient and since I was diagnosed with CF, have always taken enzymes. Again, so nice to meet you.

its really awesome your doctor has been checking that, the time that i was diagnosed was the first time anyone had questioned my sugers. in highnsight (sp?) i would say to stay away from soda and candy. i never realized how much those two things were apart of my diet. although i didn't eat alot, maybe a two soda's a week... i feel better now without the soda and those sugar highs/crashes.

good luck with everything, and if you do have to start doing insulin...etc/etc. just remember were hear for you...and you WILL get used to it...despite all the resistance your mind meets...alot of us have been there! good luck

Kate, thanks for your kind words...I appreciate that. Yes, my doctor has been concerned about monitoring such things as glucose, cholesterol, thyroid etc. I have been happy with such labs and awareness, possible prevention. Take care.

one thing you are probably not going to need to worry about is cholesterol, so the low fat isn't particularly necessary, but deffinately cutting down the sugars is, somthing I'm still working on myself.
