Hi Karen,

My daughter started preschool when she was 3 and a half years old. She went 2 days a week for 2.5 hours; then the next year she went 3 days a week for 3 hours in the am. She loved it. I was a nervous wreck but she did just fine. At this nursery school; the children all had to be potty trained(something to consider for infection control). The teachers were great that had minimal knowledge on CF but I brought in pamphlets about CF and sat down with them. They were really good about trying to keep the classroom healthy; Purell near the tissues; they trained the kids to cough or sneeze into their arm. If a child did have to have help with the potty they wore gloves(maggie thought this was funny). They wipe stuff down with Clorox wipes...Maggie did get colds but she did fine. Also, if a kid came to school with a bad cold, they didn't hesitate to call the parents and pick them up. Socially, it was so good for Maggie she is happiest doing fun stuff and she loved nursery school.

DS has been going to preschool since he was at least two -- his daycare has preschool from 8:30 to 11:30 every morning.

DS goes to a center and we were very comfortable with the way they do things -- wiping down toys, sanitizing everything, letting us know if someone is sick or what bugs are going around the schools, etc.

Because DS is an only child, we wanted to make sure he got some socialization, learned to interact with his peers, share...

My CFer son started pre school when he was 3 1/2 in a small cooperative school of only about 12-15 kids in his class. He is a very social only-child so not doing it was not an option for his mental/social health. Being a co-op meant his mother was there quite a bit and could get better compliance with hand washing, germ prevention, etc. than might otherwise happen.

My boy has probably got more colds than if we'd kept him home. You'll hear plenty of pro/con arguments for letting CF kids getting colds but I won't kid you: it is no fun to see my boy with a series of colds from October to April and it has meant more meds/nebs to keep him healthy. Still, the decision has to fit the kid and my kid would shrivel up if he could not join the scrum of friends he has in school..so we all just deal.

My daughter is 4 and we are hoping she will be accepted into the Michigan School Readiness program this fall. She has not had much sickness at all in her lifetime so far and I really hope this continues when she starts in school. She is very social though and needs the company of the other children and the learning. The only way to find out if it is a good or bad thing is to try it! If it doesn't work out and there become too many problems, we may have to try another route. We will see. Good luck to you!
