We have a 3 year old, soon to be 4 in May to full day preschool. He goes M-Th from 8-3:30 and he loves it. Yes there are germs but you just have to teach them good hand washing. We needed him to go b/c my husband and I both work and we would rather have him in preschool then daycare. He loves it, he knows all of his colors, can count to 20, knows his shapes and is learning to write his name. I think it is great interaction for kids even if they have a mommy or daddy at home during the day. I would definately think about it, especially since it is only 2 hours a day for a total of 6 hours a week. Good luck with the decision.

My son is now 13. but I went through the same issues ten years ago. He went to preschool 3 days a week, then to school 5 days a week and now is at a huge high school with 1600 kids. He knows to stay away from coughs and to wash his hands etc etc. He's doing great despite being exposed to 1600 germs a day. Hope it is the same for you and your little one!

HI Karen, I've just joined this forum and was so glad to see this topic. thank you for asking that questions and thanks to all who replied. My son (nCF) is turning 3 and Siobhan, my daughter (just turned 1) was so sick in hospital for months when she was first born that we needed help so we put him in daycare part time 3 days a week. Obviously we didn't know she had CF so it was an easier decision to make at the time and Now we worry and keep talking about taking him out. He loves it but we worry about the extra exposure to my daughter. We really like the daycare but wonder if our daughter will ever attend. My husband and I are of differing views on the subject. I think the socialization is very important and my husband would prefer to avoid the extra colds and all that goes with that.

I would reconsider sending your 2 yr old to preschool. I am 39 parent with CF. My children do not have CF but if they did they wouldn't go. The goal is to decrease the lung damage over time. Your children will be exposed to so much during the course of their school career there is no reason to start it early. If you are a stay at home mom, have a few children over to your house, take them to story time at the library. Don't expose them to the germs of preschool. Pick and choose what experiences are most important for social, emotional, and academic development. Choose carefully.
