Prednisone and pregnancy?

Did anyone have to go on prednisone while they were pregnant? (and why?)
I'm just curious b/c one of the nurses said that if my cough doesn't get better and I come in they can do this, and that...one thing she mentioned was prednisone. But, she was just talking and since she's not the doc I don't take any of that really seriously.

Christian,

Prednisone rises bloodsugar levels dramatically. I can no longer take that when I'm sick since I"m borderline diabetic. Please do as much as possible to avoid it.

Pregnancy impairs the pancrease already and adding prednisone to it would be asking for trouble IMO as Jenny said. however that being said it is always a ratio of harm vs help so IMO if lung doc definately want you on it talk with OB first and see their opinion and it never hurts to do your own research before talking with either of them so you have an opinon and can ask about other options.

Yes, I went on it for a short time during my last trimester when it was hard to breathe. I think I was on >20 which is deemed acceptable. I was under strict watch by my CF doc and also the director of the OBGYN clinic at one of the top hospitals so I know I was in good hands. I believe it's OK for a SHORT period of time. It did not cause me or my unborn child any complications.

Thank you shoshanna-I doubt that its going to come to that for me, b/c prednisone is always a last resort medication for me-I rarely go on it. I only mentioned out of curiosity b/c I didn't know that they'd even consider putting someone on it while pregnant.
It is nice to know that if it was an absolute must for me, that someone like you used it and the baby was ok.

What is prednisone used for? is it a steroid? If it is, I can tell you that I did have to take a steroid for a short time due to an allergic reaction to augmentin, and I was told that a small dose for a short time was OK - don't know if that helps at all?
