Prednisone

Hi all!

It has been quite some time since I have posted on here. I pop in every now and then to make sure everyone is well, but feel weird posting here with Courtney not living with me on a daily basis.

Courtney is adjusting to life in Maryland well. She started her junior year in high school and loving her new school. Her health is doing well (knock on wood) and her weight is still holding around 95. She is still 5"3' so she still needs to gain weight, but at least she is not losing any.

Lauren started college and moved into the dorms. She is LOVING it. Cameron started high school and is in the marching band. I am having some empty nest issues, but am hoping to feel better about it soon and enjoy the peace and quiet of a house with no teenage girls running around and all the drama that goes along with teenage girls....lol.

Anyways....I have a quick question. Prednisone seems to be prescibed when people get a resp. infection. What is the purpose of the prednisone for the lungs? Does it help to clear mucus out? What are the side effects of taking a short (around 5 days)/low dose round of prednisone?

I have only been on prednisone once (for 10 days) during a respiratory infection. My doctor had taken blood and run test including a white blood cell count before beginning IV antibiotics. A week later, my FEV1 had not improved, so he did another white blood cell count. My white blood cell numbers had actually increased instead of decreased. At that point, he decided that it must be due to inflammation, so he prescribed prednisone. Very quickly (within 2-3 days) I felt noticeably better and at 5 days, he began tapering me off prednisone. Anyway, my CF doc determines when I need prednisone by my white blood cell count rising, instead of declining during antibiotic treatment.
